Does anyone know how to make a climbable ladder?

Hi I have been using a few tutorials one on making a platformer the other on how to make a ladder for a platformer, except I have tried the last tutorial and experimented with the PMO still to no avail, once I had him climbing but he began to sink slowly when he was on the ladder, so I tried disabling gravity only when he was on the ladder and that worked until he got off the ladder and jumped, i tried having a invisible obstacle he would bump into that would return gravity back to normal and that worked but then the approach the youtube video tutorial showed me for getting the character to go down the ladder did not work, he just froze their.

I ended up finding a backup I had made just before I messed things up where at least his platform movement was still working,
I was wondering if you could give me any ideas on what to do?,
