So I'm under the impression that Clickteam isn't the most ideal for an online game, but if I would to, what program/extension is recommended? I've seen the program called "Moo" though it seems outdated, or should I still use it?

Also unrelated, and this is gonna sound idiotic (absolute idiot here), what exactly are the differences and all the differences between objects in different layers

Lacewing may be something to consider. I know next to nothing about it, but I've seen it mentioned in other posts about online games.
Based on what I know, objects can only interact with other objects in the same layer. For instance, a character sprite in layer 2 will not interact with a ground sprite in layer 1.

You might want to do some more research before trying to dive right in to dealing with online game dev. Things we don't think about are networking issues and customer support. Those will eat into your time tremendously. Highly suggest getting your game to have a solid gameplay loop in local co-op or split screen play before packing up for the online networking quest.

Yep. I hate to be negative, but there are at least two very good reasons not to:
1) It's very complicated and requires a huge amount of work, so it will very likely never happen (I'm not aware of even a single finished multiplayer online game made in CF2.5 / MMF2). It's not fun work either - designing the game and creating the artwork may be work, but they're also fun, so even if the project never amounts to anything, you'll still have enjoyed the process. The same cannot be said of multiplayer stuff, which is ultra-tedious.2) The chicken and egg problem - noone will play your game, because noone else is playing your game. Unless you're a major studio with an established following, you'd have to put a huge amount more work into marketing and making the game look good.
I'd say make a single-player game, and if you see it through to completion, and it's good, and you get really lucky, then you'll attract some players and can start thinking about adding multiplayer.

Just attempting to make a very light minor personal project to try the engine- the negative points don't apply since I'm only trying to do the extreme basics and it'll just be played occasionally with friends

they were trying to hint at starting easy. Online is not. start with doing a chat or message app. that as basic as it gets;
btw muddy ; i finished one.... and what you said. if no one plays it, then meh -
OctoShot Go with Lacewing Blue, there's event screenshots and linked video examples, explanations of underlying concepts and briefs about the protocols, it supports most platforms (Windows, Android, iOS, HTML5, UWP, as of writing this), it has free public servers, and the creator is unbelievably good-looking.
