Getting frequent reports from Steam players that they cant load steamworks.mfx?

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • Every now and again I get a forum post on my game that some user have a problem that they "Cannot load Steamworks.mfx". And these are just the people who actually write about it so I assume the amount of people who it happens to that does not report it (perhaps they just refund the game) can be much higher.

When searching on the Steam forums for Steamworks.mfx I find threads about this on pretty much every Fusion game it seems so it is not just my game: Please login to see this link.

Do anyone know why this is happening and if anything can be made to minimize the risk of this affecting players?

  • Interesting. I've never once ran into this issue on any of my machines. I just re-downloaded Distraint that I have in my Steam library and tested the various legacy/deluxe exe files, but all worked as expected. What's really interesting here is it's not using the unpacked exe option, it's all built in to the exe file itself.

Was the Steamworks.mfx updated after the unpacked exe option was added? Wondering if it was updated, did the update create an unexpected issue?

When was the unpacked exe option added though? Looking at the forum posts about the issue it seems to date back several years. Just taking one at random (Distraint) and that post is from 19 Feb, 2017.

  • On the discord Defisym mentioned that steamworks.mfx requires the following DLL files to work:

    KERNEL32.dll
    USER32.dll
    ADVAPI32.dll
    steam_api.dll
    MMFS2.dll

I believe the first three are already included in windows. I've had at least one user report this issue to me before, I added the 2015-2019 MSVC distributables to the Steamworks backend and asked the user to test again but they didn't reply (several months ago now though)

  • You need to find out what version of windows is causing this error. Sounds like a legacy problem or compatibility issue.
KERNEL32.dll is OS specific. I remember having to lift an XP KERNEL32.dll to get a really old app working so it could be that the game isn't compatible with the OS.
These days people try to get away with using WINE so might not even be Windows they're using.
