  • I might order it soon, just so i have it cheaper. I wouldnt install it when its released, just because I always try to wait for SP1... but by then they will probably put the price up.

Question is how many of my computers to update...lol... doesnt help that i am more interested in the MAC os at the moment. :D

  • One thing to keep in mind when pre-ordering the upgrade. It requires XP or Vista to be pre-installed. Meaning if you ever have to reformat or get a new hard drive, you have to install your xp or vista first then upgrade. It won't just let you enter a product key or insert your disc like previous versions of windows.

Obviously this doesn't affect the full version, only the upgrade versions.

I will get Windows 7 when I get a new computer.
No pressing need for me to run it right now.

As long as Yves and Jason have a copy they can do the testing with MMF :)

Yeah I'm in no hurry. Vista is working fine for me. I'm sure Windows 7 is better, but it's not like my current set up is broken.

  • The UK offer is NOT an upgrade version, it's the "E" no-internet-explorer version (which doesn't support upgrading).
The US offer is for the standard "upgrade" version, which requires an existing install of Vista or XP.

  • Only US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany and France are eligible for this special offer. The rest of the world pays full price. You could always order from one of those countries, I guess.

But why in the world would I even want to buy Windows 7 as long as WinXP is still running great and is being supported? I've just bought a new laptop 6 weeks ago and it had Windows Vista on it. It ran for 2 weeks or so and then a blue screen appeared and after that is was game over. I had to re-install. I didn't really like the power and memory Vista at all, so I installed my good old WinXP again. The laptop runs very smooth now and I've got at least 512 Mb RAM more available then under Vista.

I've heard that Windows 7 runs a bit better, but why in the world do I want to pay for it and allow Microsoft even more control of my computer? If it ain't broken, don't fix it and WinXP sure ain't broken at all. I was foolish enough to replace it with a broken Vista and I'll not do that again.

  • Windows 7 is like a patched Vista, so is kinda aimed at those people on XP who wanted to upgrade, or those who dont like vista and want it better... not that Ive had that many problems with vista, except for rubbish UAC issues. But 7 is supposed to be faster and optimised.. who knows :D

It's a common misconception that there is bad DRM in Windows Vista / 7. Actually, all they have is support for the secure display path that bluray needs. If you don't play bluray, you won't be affected.

My question is, where's the ceiling?
They've got to get to a point where they can't move up anymore, and its just a matter or shifting awkwardly from side to side. I'm thinking maybe 1 or 2 more os'es from here and we'll hit it.

In my mind, XP was perfect. I think i've had maybe 3 crashes ever (Full system lockup or crash), but most of the time it was my own fault. And I use my computer to the max, so i'm not babying it.

As long as new computers are sold, there will be a new os forced on it whether we like it or not, with trivial features that worked just as well as addons via 3rd parties from the previous generation.

To me 7 just isn't worth the extra clock cycles and memory usage.

Actually its a modified version of Vista which should run faster and be more efficient (dont know if this is actually the case, just what i have heard)... so the question is... is it worth a decrease in clock cycles and memory usage :D

  • It does. I really disliked Vista, one of the main reasons were the system requirements... but Windows 7 even ran in a virtual machine with only 128 mb of RAM, which Vista does not. it also is faster accordng to many professional reviews.

Jason pretty much touched on the main reason to upgrade. If people are happy with XP, well then no need really to upgrade. But for Vista users unhappy with it's performance and resource usage, Win 7 is a good upgrade.

The problem is, you'd be hard pressed to buy a new computer without Vista on it right now, unless you build it yourself. A lot of people don't have the know-how or patience to build their own computer. So, simply buying an upgrade to Win 7 is a good alternative (though honestly, I'd recommend getting the full version, unless you really have no plans to format ever or upgrade your hardware much).

Also, in regards to a previous statement of XP being supported, Microsoft is trying to phase it out. How succesful they will be at that determines on the success of Windows 7. They wanted to phase out XP with Vista, but obviously that didn't work.

  • I've already pre-ordered from Amazon UK for £74.97. I've just installed the Beta V7 and had a quick play and it does seem faster.

  • As yet, windows 7 is successful. The only problem with Vista is that it is engineered to run on high spec systems. This is why you generally love it or hate it. Windows 7 works on a system with 96mB of RAM. Or you can just be cool and go for Ubuntu 9.10 when it comes out. <3

That's another problem with Vista's poor reception. A lot of the blame can be placed on slip shod manufacturers. A lot of companies slapped "Vista ready" stickers on computers that just barely met the minimum requirements for Vista, and it ran terribly slow. Gave Vista a pretty bad rep. Granted, being so resource intensive still isn't a good design, but it actually works quite well if you have a computer that can actually run it above minimum reqs.
