Has Anyone Been Able to Monetize the Java Mobile Port (any)

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • I'm thinking about upgrading to the developer version, but I'm curious if anyone has actually monetized any of the mobile ports? (Not IOS)

I'm just not sure how easy it is to integrate some of the java SDKs into the MMF ports.

    Thanks for sharing in advance!

Also, I saw that Android can play J2ME files now if you install something for it. Has anyone experimented with this?

  • I have created a few J2ME games however I distribute through my own private channels instead of the general masses for now. I wanted to weigh up 12 months on each so not sure what the current markets are like for java mobile games until I finish my research. I was not aware of Android supporting J2ME maybe this is something I could look at with my tablet, I'll have a go today. I would say go for it, as there is still a massive amount of users still using relatively old handsets which are only Java Mobile compat. Not only that, the upgrade to DEV is probably the best thing you will do all around anyhow.

Thanks for your reply. Android doesn't support J2ME, but you can install something that allows you to play those files. So, your users would need to download something like this: Please login to see this link.

I have no idea if it works, but there seem to be a few things like this out there.

It seems like 50-60% of users are still on java, but I was more curious about how to monetize the java apps besides offering a paid version. Any suggestions?

  • That's handy to know, I'll take a further look into it. Monetize by the way of Ads, private ad slots, sponsorship. I just tend to ship each version at £1. It's tangible and static interest gained, if it sells it sells, if it doesn't it doesn't. For every pound I generate I deposit 25% into a fund account just for that game, once the fund reaches an acceptable amount such as £10 then use it wisely but scarcely to put some marketing into it with just that budget. The initial input I put in is just a matter of time and no marketing budget such as twitter, facebook and java mobile game submission sites. See how it progresses, however, I delved into this market a bit late I think so my results aren't showing any consistency whatsoever as of yet.

Gotcha. I'll try and find a sponsor on FGL, but what you reccommend another place for java mobile games?

  • Wow, 3 weeks and no updates... I guess this platform is dead... :(

Hi redpandagames. When your question is not answered it does not mean a platform is dead. If you have a question about MMF2 and it does not get answered a person assumes that MMF2 is dead? Maybe a new person would think that, but a veteran as yourself wouldn't blink.

I have not made money with Java.

    Take care,
    Marv

  • @redpanda - with Java mobile fading away with the likes of Android/iOS taking the mainstream it's certainly far from dead dude. There is a whole plethora of needs for Java still, it's just you need to look in the right direction sometimes. With regards to games, there is still a tiny percentage in the mobile market for making money, however it will come in dire bits so if you're planning to develop J2ME games for Java Mobile then you'd be better putting your efforts into where the mainstream are and that is iOS, Android or Windows Mobile.

  • LOL! Marv, I would hardly call myself a veteran (I think I've been using for like a year now). I was hoping that someone would say java phones are an underserved niche, or "Java is still huge in Brazil!" But.. it looks like that isn't going to happen.

  • I've made money off of it on a game for the BlackBerry OS, but even they're going away from java now too. Its still good for feature phones but with so many people adopting smartphones its being pushed to the back a bit.

I had kind of forgotten about Blackberry. Thanks for commenting!
