[IDEA] ClickStick hybrid TV box/USB drive for Fusion 2.5

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

So, I came up with an idea for a game system that could play Fusion games exported to HTML5 or Android.

Called the ClickStick, it would have two sides and two plugs, each representing one of ClickStick's purposes. When ClickStick is plugged into a TV, it would load up the ClickStore website by Clickteam in a web browser. From here, players could find and play Fusion games uploaded online and converted to HTML5 (or Android, if that's the format ClickStick ends up using). On the other end would be the USB flash drive containing a single-device copy of Fusion 2.5 (or perhaps a pared-down version for exporting HTML5 games to the ClickStore). You plug the flash drive portion into a Windows PC, and then you can work on games to export to the ClickStore. In addition to this, there would be some extra space for project files (like about 4-8GB).

I could see such a thing retailing for $80-100, if Clickteam decides to create a product with this concept. What do you think?

EDIT 2: I also submitted this idea to Clickteam through their Bugbox as a Feature Request.

  • I think CT and it's users would be much better off piggybacking on the marketing of Apple, Google, Sony, Samsung etc. and creating digital content for all the already popular hardware devices rather than trying (and certainly failing) to create and market their own hardware.. would you rather develop for clickstick (lets say it gets 10,000 users) or iPhone?

  • Who says the ClickStore would have to be only for ClickStick? Clickteam has been talking about forming an online storefront for MMF and Fusion games. It could be like Valve and the Steam Machine project, where a third-party company manufactures the ClickStick and licenses the right to use Clickteam's app store (if they go through with that).

  • This sort of thing has been brought up before, and people have mentioned why it just plain wouldn't work. If only one program can make games/applications for a specific console, then no well-known developers are going to end up making games for it, meaning the console will flop.

(which I don't use anymore pretty much at all really). If there are awards for "'highest number of long forum posts", then I'd have probably won at least 1 by now. XD

  • Did you read my last post? The ClickStick would use the same ClickStore that all other supported platforms would use. Developers wouldn't build for ClickStick, they would build for ClickStore. There would be nothing exclusive to ClickStick; it would just be an outlet for playing web or Android games on the ClickStore on a TV.

  • You still don't get it, do you? Nobody outside of the Clickteam community would even know it existed, even less buy it. Also, there are no big developers who use MMF2, meaning that nobody outside of the Clickteam community would even have a reason to buy it. It would fail as a result.

  • It's a cute idea, but not for mass market appeal.
I could see making one of these as a DIY project.

As I mentioned on The Daily Click you could re-purpose a GameStick or something similar for the TV portion of the device, and include a mini thumb drive for the storage portion. Get your own plastic casing to hold all the parts, and voila!

    The aforementioned GameStick is here:

The GameStick includes a controller too something you failed to mention in your design.

  • It sounds a bit like the OUYA, which also tried to do a similar thing with it's own store. Even with a lot of public backing, many people see it as a failure for various reasons (it had a lot of hardware and software problems upon release, and hasn't been very commercially successful yet). I wouldn't bet on it having a bright future at this stage either, as it's competition is only going to get stronger. Hardware development is very risky, expensive and requires years of r&d to perfect. It's very difficult for newcomers.

I would rather CT stick to making software I think!

Would be a cool DIY project though.

ClickStick doesn't have to be a mass-market product. It doesn't have to be the next big console, or even the next OUYA. Small-scale handheld manufacturers like GCW and OpenPandora are willing to limit their product manufacture to hundreds or thousands, while the kind of people who buy GCW-Zeroes or Pandoras are willing to pay a price ensuring that GCW and OpenPandora earn enough to cover the cost of manufacturing this miniscule number of units. The ClickStick could just be part of a bundle with Fusion 2.5 + the HTML5 or Android runtimes, instead of using the customized Fusion 2.5 build like my original plan specified. And finally, if Clickteam decides not to form the ClickStore or a similar app marketplace, then the whole idea can be dropped.

It's possible for this to happen. Maybe not in the full-fledged manner I proposed in the original post, but I'm pretty sure something like that could be done if I think small.

At the very least, making it a DIY project like colej_uk or UrbanMonk said would work. A store on Aptoide for Android apps can be made for free; I could make one for Android apps made with Fusion right now, in fact! In addition, I could publish a how-to guide for installing this Aptoide store on an Android TV stick.

Although I'm not giving up on the idea entirely, I appreciate your input on the (lack of) practicality of my original concept.
