Mochi Media is shutting down.. :(

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • I just came here tonight for the same report. I'm stunned, and saddened. I can't believe it. I realize that it truly is time to move on. Flash can fade away, and we'll all tell stories about it for years to come.

Clickteam, I officially retract my request to update the flash exporter.

  • Is the flash market dead though? Just a few years ago people were reporting a lot of success via Flash Game License. I don't think Mochi closing is a sign of the end of the flash market, it's just a sign of the squeeze going on as the gaming development market gets flooded with new developers and not enough people to actually play all the games that are being pumped into the marketplace.

For Mochi to close it means that revenue can't cover the growing costs of running their servers... any kid with 2-weeks game development experience can upload their game to Mochi, the quality of games vs quantity would be result in heavy servers costs & less revenue per game as there simply isn't an audience for every game. Just because Mochi's business model isn't sustainable doesn't mean interactive web games are dead.

The real problem is the game development is oversaturated so the audience can demand something for nothing (look at free-to-play Star Wars: The Old Republic, DOTA2, LOL, Hearthstone). It's not just Mochi that can't make money on games, everybody from the indie dev to the AAA developer is struggling to figure out how to make back their money. Crowdfunding is a band-aid solution, but that is becoming oversaturated. Steam was another solution, but Steam Greenlight is causing over-saturation there too.

I feel Flash isn't dead, it's just feeling the squeeze from the mobile market, free-to-play and new generations of young developers flooding the market. What can you do as a developer? Make a standout game and people will play regardless of whether it's flash or mobile or console or PC. It may be harder to stand-out, it may be harder to monetise, but it's only going to get harder from here on out anyway. There's no time like the present.

  • I really can't say I didn't see this coming... it seems the flash game market has been on the decline ever since the mobile game market began to blossom.
But I really am saddened by this news. I run a few small portals that rely heavily on mochi services, so Im left wondering what to do next, are there NO alternatives?? Was Mochi the last standing? :(
I found out about the shutdown through kongregate, which is ridiculous. Mochi could have at least warned its users 3 months ago or something. This is really short notice, its already the middle of this month...

  • Not really fair from Mochi Media, they leave everyone with only 2 weeks to react. It's also a bit strange to learn this through an email from Kongregate, instead of getting an email directly from them (which we didn't receive yet). Back in 2010 when Shanda Games acquired Mochi Media, I asked myself how long before the shutdown.

    Mochiland announcement:

  • Quite outrageous that Kongregate has to be the one emailing me about this closure.
And seeing as they are closing with such a short notice, they must really be in trouble.

Anyone above $100 on their account will automatically get payed on 31th of march according to Mochi.

IF YOU HAVE BELOW $100 (minimum $10) YOU MUST REQUEST A PAYMENT FROM MOCHI MEDIA USING THE BELOW FORM:

Hope everyone affected by this are able to get sorted!

  • Some people at Mochi were certainly aware of the shutdown earlier. They just didn't care enough of their partners (developers, publishers) to give them prior notice. Which makes the situation even more sad.

  • Tuna and other apocalyptic people, Keep Calm! the Flash is not dead!

If now TOYOTA close the doors due some internal issues/financial things will means the future of cars are finished? i know maybe not is the best example but i hope you guys get the point.

Still people is getting a lot of money in flash, games and portals, and offer more benefits to developers, simply see the sales revenue on FlashGameLicense by months.

I start to hear the Flash is dead since JAVA and you know what was the result, right?

After, when HTML5 was announced (2009) again the same story, Flash is dead! will be much better! and in 2014, 5 years later, Flash continue being used equal or more by developers, see some stats and comparatives on internet:

Is HTML5 the future? maybe, but stop the flash exporter and not update it is a bad idea. My PC games exported to flash works great, but i tried to export the game on HTML5 and in every browser works different, also in Firefox( last version) not works none because each one have X% of capabilities of HTML5.

For this actually, in this moment, if you want to do an online game compatible with every browser, that works in the same or practically in the same way(because is some ways like the layer object not is 100% compatible) that in pc, the FLash exporter is the best option.

In 2015 HTML5 still will not be compatible with all the browser and working in the same ways and the flash market will be greater for more than a few years.

Come on! Until the .gif is used more now than last years, a format that only allows you images/animations with a limited palette of 256 colors! XD

At the end, not matter what is the "best" in the paper, if not which users/developers needs or find useful/easy to use.

  • Damn, what is really disturbing is that they got a handful of legit offers to buy-out mochi, but they would rather just shut it down. Perhaps with all the low-end developer accounts with <100$ and <10$ they are going for a shut-and-run taking a decent amount of cash away with them from the small developers and advertisers. (they are paying out >10$ but you have to actively request it)

At least i requested my current 90$. And i don't have much earnings from mochi anymore, but it would still have been thousands of dollars over a couple years if they didn't shut it down..
I have at least 4 games on mochi i would like to keep, so i'll do my best converting to custom highscores and implementing house ads for my other games, the problem is that sites hosting my games probably wouldn't even get to update to the new version unless i painstakingly contact them directly and hope for the best which is probably not even worth it..

  • LOL... I'm not apocalyptic. I'm actually optimistic and I'm just re-focusing my attention where I think it should be. :) Here's proof. I once purchased a pound of bacon. The bacon was bad, not safe to eat. I didn't stop eating bacon.

  • I never used Mochi Media or anything like that, but I would guess they are giving short notice because of the hope that a good amount of the unpaid revenue under $100 will end up not being paid. I went through a similar situation with a company named Mobihand which used to distribute java games online. They basically gave 48hours notice and were gone while owing me somewhere in the $2500 range. They basically declared bankruptcy and let the devs know last minute so we couldn't don't anything about what was owed. It's rough, but not an uncommon practice.

Hahaha XD, obviously the term "apocalyptic" was exagerated pointedly ;)

Simply I not see the point that you have to rectify about the request to update the flash exporter simply because MochiMedia has been closed. Also i not see nothing optimistic on it.

You will do the same for other versions if Steam or other internet companies of game distribution closes? There are a lot of sites like Kongregate, ArmorGames or NewGrounds,etc... that will absorb the "mass" of the MochiMedia getting more part of the cake.

Then, if flash still have some good years, still the people is getting more and more money like Kongregate that get +200% of virtual goods from flash games than the previous year, and you are optimistic, why the fact of MochiMedia has been closed is enough to rectify about continue updating the flash exporter?

  • It's sad, I liked some of their services, but talking about revenue, I always saw more from CPM Star. The market is saturated, true, we gotta get really creative to stand out, maybe find our niche. That's the only way.

My point with what i said was a bit of a joke, since my only interest in Flash was due to Mochi (sad though it is)... I'm optimistic in knowing that there's still plenty to focus on...

  • Oh gosh.. how sad. My only source of side income is going away. Ok guys... be realistic... where do we go from here? Do we have the flash game license (Please login to see this link.) / flash game distribution Please login to see this link. extension? I guess with mochi gone, this might only be the alternative for ads / distribution network

  • 1) Submit your game to Flash Game Licence first for offers from prospective sponsors
    If 1) fails
    2) Upload to Kongregate, they have their own monetization (although I had little success, my game Noughts and Crosses Extreme earned 72 cents whereas on Mochi it earned $50).
    3) Put in your own custom ads to advertise something that can make you revenue, some iPhone/Androids apps you made, some software, your website, your website can be almost empty for the time being but as you develop more you can fill it up with products.
    4) Distribute your game via Please login to see this link.

But I really think the way to go is just build a really strong product and push it out to as many platforms as possible. If you're going to make a flash port, make it a 3 level demo to advertise the mobile or pc version.
