upload and download levels

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • Hey Clickteam Community,

I am getting close to finishing a level maker for a game and would like to know if it is possible for people to upload their levels and download other peoples levels (kind of like mario maker). I would like to do this without having to download extensions, and a step by step tutorial would be of much help.

    Thanks

  • Without extensions? Impossible.
With the FTP Object: Have never used it, but should work. It is Windows only, though.
With the GET object: Very possible. Requires you to make your own webserver using either PHP, .NET or another programming language, and get your webserver hosted online. The GET object simply let you communicate with a webpage. A level could be stored as a string in an SQL table.

  • Well, first off, let me answer a question with a question: Do you have a server? If you don't, you probably won't have anywhere to actually store the levels, which means nowhere to download the levels from, which means, well, I think you get the idea. :)

If you have one, then great! That's the first step. The next step, for downloading levels, well, for one way you could do it, you can look at this tutorial (I think it uses a Windows-only object, but if runtimes other than Windows aren't a concern, go ahead and have a look): Please login to see this link.

As for uploading them, well, I personally haven't ever tried something like that, so I don't know how you'd do it (or, perhaps more accurately, I may know the vague idea (e.g. what Popcorn mentioned with the GET object being one way, and the FTP object being another way), but I don't know the specifics, which are kinda important), so let's see if maybe someone else can answer that part. :)

FYI, the FTP object comes with MMF2/CF2.5 as far as I know, so while it technically is an extension, it barely counts, aside from the fact that it's Windows-only. :)

My Please login to see this link. (which I actually use), my Please login to see this link. (which I mostly don't use), and my Please login to see this link. (which I don't use anymore pretty much at all really). If there are awards for "'highest number of long forum posts", then I'd have probably won at least 1 by now. XD

  • Thanks you both for your help.

Just one more question. Is the GET object or FTP object easier to use, and will it work on Steam if I decided to publish my game on there?

Thanks again, and I appreciate the help.

  • Steam? I have no idea how Steam Workshop works, or how one would go about implementing it, but that may actually change how you'd want to go about it entirely...

  • Clickteam's Steam Workshop tool was made in Fusion 2.5 and it can upload and publish files to Workshop. So yeah, if you are going to release your game on Steam you can able to utilize Steamworks extension to upload custom levels to Workshop and let your players download it.
