Graphics freezes but the game still runs

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • I have been having this issue with my game for a long time now:

When you leave the game area the frame is supposed to restart and load the next area but something rather weird happens sometimes. The graphics freezes completely as if the graphics driver just called it quits and let you stare at the last rendered frame. However, the rest of the game continues to play so it's not a complete crash. It's a bit hard to explain so here's some old footage of an earlier build of of Jarvis where it happens: Please login to see this link. (it's played on a surface pro 3 with low battery and Fraps recording the footage hence the crappy FPS)

Notice how the visuals just stops updating at the 0:22 mark but you can still hear the audio and everything, that's me running around blindly and getting beat up my some enemy. At this point you have to quit the game, as in turn it off and launch it again. You can try restart by hitting F2. And sure the game does restart but still no graphics, in fact now the window goes completely black. It is still responsive to my input however and I can play the game but not see what is going on.

It happens less often on my desktop computer but often enough to be a rather big issue for me. On my testers laptop it happens very frequently. On my surface pro 3 as well.

Has anyone else run into this issue before with their games?

  • I haven't encountered something like that before.. it sounds like something is "breaking" the runtime, maybe there is a particularly intensive event loading the map with fastloops/arrays etc. that can cause a bug somewhere.. your project is pretty complex, can you list all the extensions it uses?

How easily can you re-create the issue? Does it happen more often on large complex maps? You might be able to delete chunks of the games code / objects / layers / extensions / shaders etc and see if the bug stops when removing "x" object or code or whatever.. sorry I can't help more!

  • I do use a 1024x1024 tileset(Active Picture) that I build 3-4 layers of backgrounds(the 4th layer is rarely used though) by a fastloop right when the frame starts. Basically a grid of 32x32 sized tiles. I have had the freeze happen on smaller areas and big areas, I can't tell which is more frequent really.

Otherwise my extensions are Ini 1.5++ updated by Sir LB!(the footage recorded is using the old 1.5++ though so I doubt it's that), xLua, String Parser, Tokenizer(in progress of replacing string parser), Layers, Direction Calculator, Control X, File Object, Ultimate Fullscreen, Advanced Direction Object, Joystick 2 and Physics. That's more extensions than I like to have...

I've been trying to isolate the issue for a long time now but I am none the wiser...

  • It seems some objects are not affected by this like List Object, Edit Box and Button. Are those objects rendered differently than the rest?

  • Nah but it's good to know that I should keep it that way ;)
