Is it possible to do a sine wave distortion effect for the background, but not a very resource-hungry one and working with Android?

You'd probably do it with shaders, but my understanding is that custom shaders don't work on Android (if I'm wrong someone please correct me, but they haven't worked for me)...

Shader is the only way. Gameboy (and other consoles) allowed coders to access the graphics renderer directly. We don't have the same luxury, unfortunately.

Word is that anything you can do in one runtime you can do in all of them. So that would include shaders.
