Just a question about "minimum system rquirements".

  • So what's the definition of the term? I like to think of it as the absolute minimum specs that your machine needs to run a particular game at the games lowest settings.

    According to its developers, a popular exploration game that has just come out has a minimum spec that's supposed to be "reasonable". Well, I find that I'm able to run the game with a lower than required video card at the game's minimum settings.

    My question is this... Suppose the developers find out some people are able to run their game with machines significantly below the specs they spelled out. What would the consequences be if they artificially enforced their minimum specs? As in programming the game so that if it detects anything lower than what they want the player to run the game at, they force the game to close? And they choose to do this for whatever reason they refuse to disclose to the public?

  • Why would they want to do that? It would lower their sales, and for no good reason. I can't imagine it ever happening. *Maybe* a game dev that's sponsored by Nvidia might be tempted to artificially decrease performance on amd cards, or vice versa. But even that's unlikely.

    If you have a PC below minimum specs and still buy the game, a dev is going to be happy. Especially since they can wash their hands of any technical problems you might have, since they warned you about the specs.

    The whole minimum specs thing is a very broad and vague thing anyway, because there are so many factors involved. So no one treats it like more than a rough guide.

    Two people might have the same hardware, but still get very different results, because one guy is playing at 1080p and habitually leaves lots of programs on in the background. While the other person has a fresh installation of Windows with new drivers, and has lowered her resolution.

    Also, there's so much subjectivity involved.

    Personally, I hate playing games that ever dip below 60fps. Any variability in the frame rate and I find it very distracting and immersion breaking. 55fps is annoying to me. 40fps is unplayable. Yet for some people, 30fps is perfectly fine.

    So what does minimum requirements mean anyway? Does it mean that if you meet those requirements, you'll be able to get a nice 60fps game, albeit with some settings turned down? Or does it mean that you'll barely scrape through with 25fps, and only if you turn your resolution way down?

    The answer is that there is no answer. It's meant as a rough guide rather than a stone rule.

    Though there are of course certain hardware specs that are less forgiving than others. If you don't meet the ram requirements of a game, or don't have a card with the right directx version, the game probably won work, through no fault of the developers
