Your thoughts on the way Clickteam Fusion is being promoted

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • The way Clickteam Fusion is beeing promoted made me think that it is not a software for me.
They are promoting the software as if you should only use it if you have no knowledge of programming
and you are totally new to gamemaking. Also the only good things developers said were that
you can make games rapidly and create something really fast. Which to me sounds like the software
    is only good for shovelware.

So it made me rethink whether I should commit to Clickteam or choose other options
as I have some knowledge of programming and experience in gamemaking.

  • Fusion is still very useful for prototyping. Even if you choose to go down another route you could put something together in a matter of hours. The same in c++ will take days and would be a waste if you decide against the idea in the end. There are limitations in fusion but I find myself creating my own extension do add the functionality.

  • A major strong point of fusion is that you don't need a deep understanding of programming to get started. When CT goes out and makes a campaign to recruit new users, it seems obvious to put emphasis on this.

If you take a look at Please login to see this link. you will see that it's possible to make very different but also complex games.

For me, I use Fusion because it allows me to spend more time on the creative part of a project and rapidly prototype different ideas, rather than spending time programming my game engine in a scripting language. I suppose this is something that draws a lot of people to Fusion.

  • I'm not clear on what your question really is, since you're alluding to two very different issues. Are you (a) merely discussing the merits of the promotion style, or are you (b) trying to figure out whether the software is for you? The two are different questions that have nothing to do with each other.

If (b), then the solution is simple: you own the software, so try it out and see if it's for you. How Clickteam happens to market it to people who don't own the software (ie. not you) is irrelevant to the question of whether you like it or not.

If (a), well, my thoughts are that it one of the greatest things about Fusion absolutely is the fact that it's suitable for non-programmers. That's what sets it apart from many other game engines, so it absolutely makes sense for Clickteam to push that angle in their marketing. I see your point about it potentially encouraging shovelware, and in some cases that probably does happen. But this is hardly Fusion's fault. You can't blame shovelware on a tool because that tool happens to be fast. That's like saying that a powerful computer that renders 3D models very quickly encourages people to make shovelware 3D graphics. You don't blame the tool, you blame the creator.

When I see a video showing how quickly things can be done in Fusion, the last thing I think is "ooh, I could quickly slap up some rubbish and publish it". Instead, I think "ooh, if I could get this basic structural stuff done quickly, I could get to the exciting parts of game development - the polish, the complex gameplay, the nuance - more quickly". So I think this sort of thing is in the eye of the beholder. If a person is lazy and prone to shovelware, then that's what they'll see. Besides, Unity, which probably isn't as quick to use as Fusion, and probably isn't marketed that way, is the king of shovelware. Steam Greenlight is overflowing with Unity-created shovelware.

  • I am sorry, I should have made it clearer. I am not trying to find out whether the software is for me. I love working in Clickteam Fusion. I just wanted to know if the community thinks that Clickteam Fusion is targeting the right audience.

  • I don't think I understand this question or concern really.

The basic of the question should be -- Does Fusion accomplish a task you want to do or not?
Yes it does -- Continue using it
No it doesn't -- Move to something that does

It doesn't matter how easy or how hard a tool is to learn or use it comes down to -- Do I enjoy using the tool and am I able to accomplish the task I want to in it.
