Was he using "Try movement" or was he running the frame? I had some similar problems after using "Try movement" on some objects.

Apparently that happens after duplicating an object (by copy/paste, drag & drop, etc) just after you've run the frame or after using Try Movement. RichardC has posted a way to reproduce it in another post.
If you create a new backdrop or active object and delete it, the problem disappears (or you can also reload the application).
