CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Hi Everyone!
I'd just wonder if anyone is interessed to make a CrystalSpace 3D Extension.
CrystalSpace 3D is a free 3D Engine licenced under GNU LGPL.
I dont know what the rules on that licence are, but on the website it says this:
In short, the LGPL allows you to use CrystalSpace as a library in your products, even commercial products, but modifications to the library or derivative works incorporating parts of the library must be made freely available to everyone, under the LGPL's terms.
Well, anyway please check it http://crystalspace3d.org and say what youre thinkin ;) (well really, i already know.... "Not good idea").

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
If Irrlicht extension is released one day it will be awesome...
I don't know if anybody would like to adapt CrystalSpace3D in an MMF2 extension since it's a hard and long work.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Irrlicht is more or less Vaporware.
It would be great for there to be a CrystalSpace3D extension, but doubt it would be made.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Vaporware? What's that supposed to mean? It's still being worked on if that's what you're saying.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
"Vaporware is software or hardware product which is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge, either with or without a protracted development cycle."
-Wikipedia
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
The Irrlicht extension is not vaporware, it is still going to be made. Just it might be with a different developer :P.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Well considering there was a playable demo released a few years ago, the only reason for no further info to be released about it is for it to be vaporware.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
no offence but that description could be put to every microchip PIC there is. Just because there is no PUBLIC announcements does not mean that private developers and testers arent using it. It will be done someday as vortex2 said
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
still, it would be great to have some news, we are all looking forward to use it (at least the ones that believe it's gonna be released, i trust it !!^^)
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Ok here is the news:
A) It looks like Turboferret disappeared.
B) Plans are in action to make the extension anyway.
It will take time but the unofficial goal is for it to be released by the end of summer. It might happen sooner, it might happen later. It depends.
Public news is usually rare becuase people like to bug developers about when a particular project will be done. As a result people are rarely informed about the status of a project until the project is near release.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
you mean you will make the extension instead of turboferret?
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
A little bit of topic maybe =P
End of summer, i've lost count about how many years i've waited (really).
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
also thing like with the object i was saying about, screen darkening and other things, only a handful of people even know it exists, because the developer wasnt happy, everyone at CC04 in france should know about it, ext. devs should also know but no-one else does
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
I have to agree with neat_kliker2 that almost nobody saw it and if i remember well, what we saw in 2004 were screen capture not real live demos.
since then no news so i also understand the vaporware comment.
it is excellent news that the project is to be done.
so wish you good luck as it is a complicated one.

Its much better to have speculated release dates refer to which quarter of the year instead of seasons, because seasons are not consistent everywhere.

That's not true.
You could download the demo from his website. It was a quake map demonstrating various play modes like fps or rts games. I was very impressed, it ran as fast as any other 3d game on my computer.
It was a compiled demo though, you couldn't access the extension.

"That's not true.

we are not talking about any 3D extension, the CC04 ext. we are talking about is something you have never heard of
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
I don't know what you are talking about, something to do with "screen darkening", but i thought jpcr was referring to turboferret because he says...

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
I am a very busy person. I do a ton of outside contract work and I am a full time university student. As a result I can not give a concrete release date for when such a project will be done.
My goal is to have it done in late July but I can't promise this.
You have to understand that I don't have the source code that TurboFerret developed. I have done 3d programming before and as Turbo disappeared I figured it wasn't fair to the community for this extension to never come into existance.
I would be starting over from scratch as it is the only thing I could do. Naturally this will take time...
I do not work directly for Clickteam and so this project has nothing to do with them unless they decide to finance it which is possible.
I know this is not the ideal outcome but I hope that everyone can be understanding and hold out a bit longer.
Thank you for your time :).

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Thank you Vortex2 for all the work you've already done and all the work you'll done. :)
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
I wish you success with this project. A shame that you cannot simply go on with the source of Turboferret. Would surely save you lots of work ...

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
There was an actual, working, MMF file that had a walk-through, first person, 3D view. It was in a castle. It worked fabulously. But it was a multi-extension deal and more complicated than some users would like. That could have been refined over time and with some effort. Ease of use is always the Clickteam paradigm. Getting it to be easy to use is the hard part, always. We really have to struggle to break it all down, sometimes. But yet, we manage to do it over and over again.
That is why there were some early announcements and projections a about a potential extension or set of extensions that would allow 3D games in MMF. It was so close, but it seems that Turboferret has gone to the void for now. That does not mean the idea is lost or will never continue. Either we will see an extension someday, or MMF 2.5 or 3 will bring you that new power.
At least there was a real, verifiable proof-of-concept that MMF could do actual 3D games. So, it is only a matter of time before that becomes a reality and something that is accessible to the userbase.
We are always thinking about and considering that potential and it will be a reality someday. How easy and simple it will be to do is a matter of how far we can whittle the complexities of three dimensions down to something that is accessible. One way or another, we will get there and everyone will enjoy the amazing results.

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Here's a quick screen of a project I'm working on... It's an OpenGL extension... I know that the creativity and textures in this screen sucks, but I put it together in 2 minutes ;)
I can't make any promises as of now, but I'll do my best to get it done!

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
all the best for developping those extentions(irrlitch, directx or open gl..)
we'll be very happy to try out those whenever you think they are ready or to help if possible.

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
I'm already amazed of what we can do already with this software. And I know it's only gonna get better.
Also Daniel... freakin' sweet! /Family Guy
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
So, you'll make a extension or are u still expermenting Daniel??
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Well.. I'm experimenting in a serious way xD... I'm not sure how much I will be able to do, but I'll do my best to make it to release!
I'm currently working on the texture part, TGA and BMP have been implemented, gonna start with PNG soon!
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Looks cool Daniel! What does it support so far?
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Not much... I've only just started so.. I have written a type of core that handles everything... I try to make it as user friendly as possible... I have added support for primitives, lights and now I'm working on Textures, BMP and TGA are added, PNG to come!
I have also planned support for various formats and objects... That includes, models (Quake models, Half-Life model, and more), terrains, skybox/skydome...
I'll keep you updated!
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
love you both (vortex2 and daniel ) thanks for your exetensions, and for the time and effort you give to the commutnity
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Just for the case that not the same happens as with Turboferret and the Irrlicht Extension. Turboferrets example showed that there is lots of work waiting. Maybe too much for a single person. How can we assist you? I am no programmer. But maybe somebody with programming experience could help?
As for me, would it help to create some 3d stuff? If so, what kind of?
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Thanks!.. Maybe at a later time.. I'll let you know!
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
3D stuff always helps when it comes to examples and such.
I am still considering a multi extension approach and my goal is to have many developers help develop the Irrlicht extension. However I am not sure how feasible this idea really is. Time will tell.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Why not start a open source project online where everyone can help that way we all can see the progress and all can help.
Open source apps always goes much further.
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
Thanks for your work so far Daniel and vortex2. I look forward to getting to use your extensions, even if its a way off yet.
Cheers,

Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
For textures, it's not possible to use MMF2 filters for supporting all formats that MMF2 support ?
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
I don't think so... I have to read and convert the files to a format OpenGL can understand... It's a little annoying, yes...
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
-
Re: CrystalSpace 3D Extension
But maybe you can convert surfaces of MMF2 filters into OpenGL format no ?
