Why can't MMF2 take in MP3s?

Try the DirectShow object.
MMF2 cannot play mp3's because of the royalties required for it to be implemented in. In this case, I would recommend converting your files into .ogg (which has no royalties involved), or by using the DirectShow object.
You can also play mp3's with the Miniature audiere object.
