Re: A good video converter?
Super is great, I have used it in the past to convert small clips into dvds. Works great and has tons of options. Good choice.
But you have to invest some time to check out the option and also play with filesize and settings.

Maximum, check the settings of your convertion program, sounds like it is set to export PAL format, that's why it's playing at 25 fps and stuttering. You need to set it to NTSC which is 29.97 fps and this should give you the correct result.
Another alternative to use Windows Movie Maker. This will convert your movie to WMV format and maintain the frames per second setting. Though not sure if it will import a MKV file, I've never even heard of this extension. Also, it may resize the video to 640 x 480 to take that into consideration.
Re: A good video converter?
I don't believe Windows Movie Maker supports MKV's, and unless you use the live version it cuts out some really vibrant colors.
For video conversion I usually use one of the many ffmpeg wrappers, but VLC might be another one to try.
Re: A good video converter?
PRISM VIDEO CONVERTER!
www.nchsoftware.com
It also has almost every other type of converter software (pictures, sound...)
Re: A good video converter?
SUPER is great, but the configuration is confusing sometimes...and it's slow in converting (on my PC, if you have PC with high specs then that is in different case).
I'm using Total Video Converter. It's easy to use, and supports many formats. I think MKV is supported too. But this program is not free.
But I prefer SUPER, if you need the better results :)
Re: A good video converter?
^^ Mine are all free.
But there's always www.media-convert.com

Re: A good video converter?
RickyRombo, thanks for that online site to convert videos! I didn't know of such a thing :O. Now I can watch YouTube .flv downloads easily!
Re: A good video converter?
You could have just used www.keepvid.com ;)
Re: A good video converter?
But I have others not from YouTube...and not just video files.
Re: A good video converter?
I use FFMPeg and make my own conversion scripts in the sendto menu in windows. I can then right click a video and convert to whatever.
FFMPEG is commandline driven and doesn't use a gui. It can read and convert to all the popular video/audio formats.
It can import multiple images, videos as well as export to them.
Just so happens that Super is a GUI for FFMPEG so there you go ;)
Re: A good video converter?
Thanks for all the help guys!
I used Super to try and convert that 4.37 GB .mkv to a .wmv
It took all day, and when I came home it had an error message failing to convert :(
It does convert slow, but I also didn't expect it to be too fast considering it is 4.37 GB's. My CPU is a dual core AMD running at 2.3 GHZ, with 3 GB of ram.
The issue for me is not so much playing around with the different settings to see if it will work, I don't mind that... it's just that the amount of time it takes to get the thing converted is really not ideal. I do have another workstation and I may have to start using that one just for conversion, lol.
I'll keep using the advice you guys gave, too. I'm always blown away by how helpful this community is.
Re: A good video converter?
Video converting is hard, you have to convert it into a format that can be then reconverted to the new format. Of course wit will take all day, unless you hire infinite monkeys at infinite typewriters and find the one with the data for the converted video format. :p

I'm used to converting small clips, less than 100 MB's. Stuff this huge (4 gigs) is really new for me. It really stinks when you let it run all day only to come home and find that it failed for some small reason, lol.

I'm sure someone's working on an extension for that...
Re: A good video converter?
Darn it. The conversion failed again. 5th time now, and I've played with evry setting I could, mixed and matched. Still, failure.
Is there any service anyone is aware of that I can pay to have them convert an .MKV to a .WMV? I've been looking around google but all the conversion services I've seen seem to want to just put your stuff on a DVD like a home movie.
Re: A good video converter?
Download the demo version of Adobe Premiere CS4, it should be able to do it for you. I use Premiere for all my video work and it's fantastic!! Though, again, not sure about the MKV file format.
Re: A good video converter?
I use Corel Video Studio. Not sure about all the video formats it supports, but super easy to use, and has about all the features I need for videos. Beats the pants off of Windows Movie Maker.
Of course, not freeware, but it's pretty inexpensive. Tried a demo of Adobe Premier and that seemed a lot less intuitive. Sure, might be more powerful, but for what I do, I don't need advanced features.

Nothing, except I'm trying to convert an MKV to a WMV.
