Water Surface Object Demo 2
Hi everyone!
Here's a new demo of the object. I have optimized the code quite a lot and managed to get decent framerates for at least smaller uses.
This time I have 2 types of water, ripples and waves. It is not recommended to have both enabled at once since it will use tons of CPU.
Enough talk, here's a demo:

Cheers!

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
That is so cool! I turned all the features on and all the way up, and still got 58+ fps. :D
Great work!

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Very nifty, does this work in a square only, or will it have some sort of alpha mask function for irregular shaped lakes/puddles?
Seems very optimized, I had everything turned up and experimented with all the features, framerate never dropped below about 105fps for me. Excellent stuff.

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Thanks everyone =)
It only supports square shapes and I think it will stay that way... It's however easy to just put a mask above it...
Adding support for an alpha mask would only slow it down more I'm afraid...

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Amazing!!! :D
it would be possible to have an option to have a perspective view?
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
I'm not sure what you mean, how would you want the perspective???
I would still like to keep the number of new features to a minimum since speed is critical with this objects =\

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Come on, give us nice features!
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Isn't the current ones nice enough? ;)
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Wooooaaaahhh, so awesome!
My spex:
3.25GB Active RAM (why I have 4gb physical on XP who knows?)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @ 2.66GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS 512MB
Win XP Home (I think, could be Pro)
Results:
No effects: 160fps
Ripple only: 125 - 130fps
Wave only: 136 - 142fps
Both: 115 - 120fps
This with all settings on max.

Indeed they are which is why we expect much better of whats coming next.
I have a GeForce 6150, 48FPS with full features.

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Works perfect for me!
This is amazing!
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Wow this is great! I get 85fps with both features turned on. I will check at home on my 9800gtx and post results.

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Awesome stuff... is this going to be coming out at some point?
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
It's almost done, so yeah... really soon! =)
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Wonder how it fairs at 1680x1050 fullscreen, lol. Would love to see that when it's out!!
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
I can answer that for you right now... NOT GOOD! xD
I works fine for smaller resolutions but that's it =\

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
does it work with objects that has pixelshaders? Does it work with rotated and resized objects?

No, it does not work with HWA.

Yes, it does! =)

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
It's very nice but in windows task manager it was around 50% for me. If the demo was all the controls it would also be nice to be able to adjust the waves angle for each of the 2 also. It makes a cool ocean/rain effect, maybe one of the other devs will help you lower the cpu down if possible. Is there plans for HWA support when the new SDK is out?
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
If you want more advanced waves maybe you should consider a hardware based one?!
I have a couple of shaders that does some really nice water effects, but this extension was meant as a software based solution! =)
The way this extension works requires quite a lot from your CPU and the code is already very optimized... Avoiding stuff like float calculations whenever possible and such... It's not gonns get much faster than this I'm afraid =\
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Ok well it was just a suggestion, i could do a HWA shader i guess. Either way it will still be very nice :)
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
=)
I'll try to add support for changing angle, but if it slows it down I'm afraid it will have to be removed!
BTW, the current version allows for changing wave lengths and is about 10 fps faster! ^^

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Any Idea when a Public Release would be ready?
btw, it looks very nice, keep up the good work :)

How did u get hold of this extension?
Oh I just saw it, sweet!

Check the Released Extensions Forum. ;)

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Hello,
what a great object! Thank you very much, Daniel.
Please, could anybody help about how to set the ripple and rain effect? I can't find the right parameter for it. I don't see any ripple.
Thank you
Regards Peter

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
How do the ripples work again? O.o I just tried to create ripples again, like I did last night, and they dont seem to work? First time I did it, it seemed really simple and straight forward :o
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
I think its a bit slack that the extension comes with no example or help file.
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Well an example would be nice..but if someone like me can use it on their own, I guess it's not crucial :)
-
Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Really nice extension, bit high on the cpu as i said before but very useful and gives a really nice result. :)
In terms of a example it would have been nice, i got a basic thing running fine but i prefer when extensions have a basic example included also. There was 2 previous test exe's which seemed to show it's effects well so maybe Daniel will make those available.

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Thanks DanielRehn, this example should be helpful to people. It should also go with the main extension release also because im guessing after a while a post will be hard to find for some people maybe.
I have found what seems to be a bug. In your mfa on the waves example on the right side it seems to make a solid part move in and out. Hopefully this is possible to fix :)

Re: Water Surface Object Demo 2
Great extension! BTW, the description says the object makes wave effects, but the screenshot shows a rain effect. :)
