Flash External Files [Discontinued]

This is an extension for flash that lets you load external files. (by user request) This does not require any hacks or modified files.

Features:

• Load Files From Your Server (MyFile.jpg)
• Load Files From Online (http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/srpr/logo1w.png)
• Supports png, jpg, jpeg, gif, & even swf files
• Basic Modifications (Scaling, Rotations, X & Y Coordinates, etc)

Notes:

• Some issues with MMF2 swf files (Not all show up. I have no idea why this happens. :confused: Flash made swf's work fine.)
• Animated gifs are not supported yet.
• Images will show over controls(buttons, etc) so take this into account when using this extension.

Would be nice if you could load embedded files (binary data).

Do you think you can add audio files as well?

Perhaps in another extension. This was just supposed to be a quick workaround until(if?) the Active Picture got ported. lol

Wonder why is that... how MMF2 generated swf's differ from "normal" swf's..??

Loading images works like a charm.

With swf's, I noticed that Mochi preloaders show just fine, but when the game itself is about to start, nothing happens. Tried also with an empty MMF2-generated swf.

Can this be used to load a CSV file (a text file)?

I sure could use that ability!

Obviously, I know I can use it for images as well, so a resounding WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!

the get object did not work for me to download my text file... If you know of a way LB, please let me know!

Maybe it's a flash bug? I thought Jamie released a temporary version or something that only had GET features. What part didn't work?

Well, that's a good question, and honestly, its been too many days since I was working on that issue, and I don't recall exactly what wasn't working. Although I do recall that I worked on it for hours, and couldn't manage to get the file from web site to the list object.

Did you create a crossdomain.xml file so that you can load data from other servers (If the file is not on your website)?

no, i didn't, but the file is on my site...

Just an FYI, I am currently working on an extension that will allow you to load/save files to/from your hard drive. ;)

it would be SWELL if it could pull it from a web location!

If you're willing to provide an example of downloading a csv file from my site and inserting that file into the list object, i would be so much more than thankful...

Note that my web host is set up such that file names ARE Case Sensitive

if anyone wants to use the Dictionary file, you're welcome to it... It works GREAT with the dictionary object in non-flash games.

As you can see, the dictionary file is just too big to load into a list object (it has to redraw every frame) so I am going to make an example that handles it differently and you can tell me what you think.

I made two more attempts:

As you can see it's still too slow. :(

Well, I tried. Maybe an object should be made for this. I'd do it easily but I don't know how to make it for flash or any flash code.

Thanks a ton LB for your efforts on this! I'm at work and can't test it, or even open the mfa's right now, but I do plan to review this as soon as my lunch break starts!

The file is really large, and I can't change that... it was created originally with the dictionary object in mind, and was perfect for it.

Send the word to the server have the server check it and send back the results. Might work better then making the user download a huge list of words.

I thought about that, but I don't have the skills necessary to write the java/php/python to do exactly that.

Now, if ANYONE can write THAT code, I would be happy to host it, so EVERYONE can use it.

The program would be pretty simple, pass it a "word" via GET Object and query the database list and return the word if it's in the list or 0 if not. For that matter, it could return 1 or 0 (true or false).

Anyone want to write that? Everyone doing flash word games would be thrilled to have it, i'm sure!

i think we hijacked this thread, which isn't really meant to be about the topic of dictionary.csv ... I'm going to start a new thread, and I really hope we can come up with a solution.

Stupid question, but how do you use this extension? i tried with a .swf and a .png and it seems to load (from the browser status), but it doesnt show anything. I tried using the show action both first and last with all options inbetween.
An example .mfa should have been included ;)

My mistake, I will whip up an example and post it when I get a second. :)

Does anyone have a clue on why it fails to load a MMF2-generated swf but shows "normal" swf's without any problems?
