Using Objects from a sub application in a separate frame

This is probably a really stupid question but I cannot seem to find the answer anywhere.

I have a sub application which I am using as an inventory system. I want it so that when my player picks up an object an image of the object appears in the sub application inventory screen.
But I have no idea how I can link the two frames so that it can be achieved.

Set up completely new items in the sub-application. Use global values. Let's say in your main frame your player picks up a knife. Set global value A to 1. In your sub-application set knife2 item to your inventory if Global Value A=1.

ok, I would make an object that includes all items each stored in a different direction, say direction1= item1, direction2=item2, etc. make this object global.

Now you have this object on the main game frame and in the inventory frame. When the player takes the object in the main game frame you can use global values, INI object, an array, etc. to trigger it into the inventory frame. if you make an array make it global, so any information stored on the main game frame will be available in the inventory frame, no need to save and load.

I think you can make it from there, it's just a matter of checking your array or ini file and render the items you already have in the inventory frame.

Oruga that is a really good idea I will give it ago once I get my head around Global Values.

I haven't been able to get it to work yet but this is what I have:

Frame 1
Upon Pressing Enter and player is overlapping with object. Set Global Value A to 1. Destroy Object.

Menu(sub application)
Global Value A=1. Object Reappear.

Now with what I have the item never reappears in the menu. Anyone have any ideas?

Use a completely different Item for the sub-application. Set it in position if Global Value A=1.

The object is different (well its the same but a different name, does that make a difference?) and I just tried the position idea but still no luck, it now reads as:

Global Value A=1. Set position.

Well, forget about the item that got destroyed in the main frame. Just like starting over from scratch.

Global Value A =1
--->place the item at position 0,0

It is impossible for that code not to work.LOL

Just make sure Global Value A=1

And I have Global Value A=1 set position of object to 0,0 and still nothing :(

did you check the "share global values & strings" box in the sub-application settings? (unchecked by default).

Thanks a lot oruga that was the problem! I'm such a noob I don't know about the little details.

Now with the solution you suggested earlier, do you need to be able to use arrays in order to pick up an item and position it in the menu depending on the order in which you picked them up? If you understand any of that?
I don't know anything about arrays sadly

if you are gonna use a file to save the inventory items you have taken you need arrays or INI to store the data.

To be totally honest with you, if you are just learning I think an inventory is more of an advanced thing and I don't recommend you just copy and paste examples, you gotta understand what you are doing and how everything works and it may be too much information to absorb. Slowing down would be a good idea and just starting by making something more simple and build it up from there.

You are probably better off using INI this time, that's less complicated. When you pick up an item just write on your INI item1=1 now on your inventory sub-application check all items from your INI, if they are >0 then you make them appear or create them. You gotta check them on your game frame too, so if you have taken item1 destroy it so the player can't take it again.

Well all I need the inventory to do is store 2 items and then combine them to make a new item so it's not overly complex :) there just seems to be a lack of material for specifically what I need. I will have a look into INI's thanks

Are you coding in the sub-application frame? Yes, make sure you have done as oruga said.
