Making something look jelly, jucy, bouncy

I watched this video a while ago about making a game look "juicy" by adding a bit of "bounce" to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy0aCDmgnxg

I want to try this out, but I wonder if anyone else have played around with this and know any good formulas for making this happening? I guess you have to manipulate size and rotation in a way that makes static object look alive and more dynamic.

It is subtle but it adds very polished look to the menu that I dont think would be there if it was just static text.

Is there any examples of things like this somewhere?

I believe they actually describe one formula in the video for easing in... which is just:

Position + (Target-Position)*0.1

I use that one a bit in the current game I'm building.

But it would be great to get some more formulas listed here... like for an ease in with a bit of bounce/settle.

I believe for that "juicy" game, they probably had some sort of tweening library that they just took advantage of. I wish MMF had a cross platform tweening extension or something... or just had tweening built in.

I really like the rubber band looking effect of when the ball hits the walls. That alone is a great effect! Does anyone have any examples using the easing object and how it's used?

Maybe we should work together to make a big example file with different cool effects and post here in one mfa. :)

I know King_Cool is very busy at the moment, but I've seen him code amazing effects using what he had mentioned above in his post. Pure awesome!! I don't understand it, but it's eye candy for sure and fits the juicy/ Bouncy/ Jelly stuff..!!

OldLongDragon, we are talking about the expressions behind the effects. They are not animations, they are math calculations. The effect I mentioned, IMO, it's better than the ball just bouncing off the wall like you see in every game like this. With this bumper or rubber band effect, the ball looks like it's getting pushed off the wall/walls instead of just bouncing off them and the speed of the ball is increased for that time and then slows down to normal speed. IMO, it's a great and useful effect.

I can respect your opinion, but IMO "eye candy" is the new way for games these days.

Perhaps there should be a community effort to create an example file / clone of the "juicy breakout" or something similar?

We could build the game in steps: each week, everyone tries to create the best version of an effect, and the best one goes into the game.

Break it into steps like: Easing, Ball hit effect, particle spray, BG wobble, ball trail, etc.
Chosen effects would be selected based on ease of programming, framerate impact, and visual appeal.

Gotta disagree with you yet again...

Animations cannot dynamically adjust when interacted with like that. You *need* expressions to drive certain things. Like the shattering blocks, they shatter based on random numbers and also the velocity/angle of the object hitting them... If you tried to do that with animations you'd need hundreds of different animations. Same with hitting a ball off a long wall and having the wall bend in where the ball hit... You'd need animations of the wall reacting along the entire axis.

If you replaced a lot of the stuff in that video with static animations, it wouldn't look anywhere near as fluid.

Also I agree with KLiK-iT... Adding this stuff is better than not adding it. Obviously there is a point where it's too much, but having a bit of easing on a moving object is far superior than having nothing at all. Even if a game is fast paced, this subtle details can be the difference between a good game and a great game.

To really understand one needs only understand what Sinus and Cosinus does ( not how they work technically behind the sceenes ).
Im not going to get into that here ( unless someone really wants me to try ), since its kinda abstract and may be difficoult to grasp and comprehend ( although it VERY simple once you understand ).

Can anyone provide an example of a movement ease in with a slight overlap/bounce at the end? (into a settle)

So basically a formula for an object moving from one location to a target destination, with the object going slightly past the target and bouncing back into a settle at the target?

You can use the easing object to achieve this. I think it's called "Back" when you are choosing the ease out type.

I'd really prefer to avoid having to use an extension just to do this.

Yes me to, as long as it is not supported by all runtimes. It could be useful to look at examples that use it though for reference.

I would like to see the code behind the breakout interface/menu. That would be useful to use in any game.

Nice example but I was looking more for something that moves to a target, overlaps it a bit and then comes back and settles to a stop. Also... you can use the simple ellipse movement and just set X radius to 0 to get an up and down movement like you're doing in the example. :)

Captain Obvious to the rescue!

Dead or Alive is a game series that is notorious for showing a lot of large chested women and focusing on only that. Hence the "beach volleyball" games which are just an excuse to show bouncy chests in every conceivable camera angle.

You know... because the title was about how to make something bouncy... get it?

Its not exactly the same, but very similar.

It uses Tan for the Dropdown Effect, and Sin for the Floating Effect.

Its also quite costumizable.
You can change speed of both effects ( by increasing EffectAngle_ faster ).
You can change the power of the Float effect ( by setting EffectRadius_ ).
You can decide which direction the Letters should start floating in ( EffectRadius_ 90 for up, EffectRadius_ 270 for down ).
I also believe you can gloriously mess things up by changing EffectAngle_ and EffectRadius_ in the code.
