Hey Clickteam,
How could I create a game similar to the Match card game in Mario Bros. 3 on the NES? There would be 20 cards flipped face down so the player couldn't see the image on the front of the card. The player would then flip over a card, lets say a flower, and then would have to flip another card and hopefully match a flower. If not, the cards would turn face down again. I'm sure y'all know what I'm talking about. Thanks Clickers!!!
Have each set of cards use an alterable value to store number
Example
Both of the Flowers cards have - Alterable value A = 1
Both of the Mushrooms cards have - Alterable value A = 2
Player picks card 1
Store the picked card alterable value A in global Value A
Player picks card 2
Store the picked card alterable value A in global Value B
Check if Global value A = Global value B
If it does the cards match
If it does not the cards do not match

I started working on the card match game and I have a few questions. When you say "store the picked card alt value A in global Val A" do you mean "set the picked card alt val A in global value A?" Also, would I use duplicates of the items or use a new active object for each card?
I would guess:
1-yes, store = set
2-your preference, however for duplicates you should setup a routine to assign each card their values,
while for different actives you could just pre-setup their values in frame editor
I'd say it depends on the number of items involved

I'm having a little trouble with the events. For example, I have two flower card active objects with the same alterable value A=1. When player clicks on the first flower card, I set the alt value A to global Value A. Then if the player clicks on the second flower card, I set its alt value A to global Val B. I created another event, if Global Value A = Global Value B then destroy the flower cards. But when I start the frame the cards are already destroyed. Its as if Global Value A = Global Value B to begin with. If its not too much, could you make a small example? Thank you

I would do this way.
Just a quick example with only mushrooms and flowers.
Feel free to ask if something's unclear!
Obviously, since in this example I randomly generate card seeds,
you shall modify a bit to have always a perfect number of couples/match for each card

I think it would be rather quick to do with a list object

assuming you have 20 exact card
(otherwise you should add loops and couples of numbers to the list object)
All you have to do is drawing missing animations in card object (I did some random line sketches)
And maybe setup a "match ok!" text, plus a win-screen on counter=10

Thank you so much. I should have stated I only have 18 cards. So there are 9 active cards. I have a nice animation for the cards and setup the code just like your example. However, none of my cards are flipping. I'm pretty sure its something simple. Hope you can help brother. Thanks. Here's my MFA File. Its the second frame. Feel free to test the first, its a puzzle slider game built from the tutorials. There's no ending yet, just always challenging.

Hope you guys don't mind me butting in, but I've been following this thread 'cause I think the code is kinda neat.
Emerson, a few errors I found in the way your code differs from Schrodinger's:
1) In LINE 4, the code for Set current line to Random(List Nb Lines( "List" ) ) needs to immediately follow the creation of the card, but you've reordered it to last. Press Ctrl+L to bring up the event list editor and drag this line up so it's the second event to fire. This is why your cards aren't flipping.
2) In LINES 6 & 7, you have Change animation sequence to 10 + Symbol( "Active 3" ), but in Schrodinger's, it's 11 + Symbol. (I assume you changed this because you have 1 less card type).
The way this works is each card will have a value of 1-9 for its "Symbol" variable. 11 + "Symbol" will jump the animations from Animation 12 through Animation 20, which is where your card animations lie. Changing this to 10 will make one set of cards (the ones with the Symbol variable of 1) jump to Animation 10 + 1, which is the default "Stand Up" animation.
3) You're going to need to loop your animation sequences back to Frame 15 in the object editor, otherwise they'll only hold on your picture for one frame before jumping back to stopped.

Awesome Man! I got the cards to flip and stay on the pictured frame. I am learning so much from examples like these. The last issue I'm having is that one set of cards will not flip. I set the Symbol variable back to 11+ symbol. I have 9 different animations cards. Here is the updated MFA file.

I like also your puzzle game, smooth and polished!
The last nasty bug lies in the setup of the list object,
from frame editor, in the list object properties/settings,
you must uncheck the "1-based-index" options.
In this way, you will have a 0-based index,
the same as "Random" function,
so when the Random function will look for the line to pick,
will find something on the list when returning 0
(and this is why the bug could happen on.. randomically selected cards).

Thanks brother! I'm about a year into fusion. This is my first ever game creation in my life. Really excited. Grew up with Nes, Snes, 64 etc... I never would have thought I would ever make my own games. This is one of the mini games I'm making for my job! Those products are some of the stuff we sell. Lol. I've been having a lot of fun with this code, and I've been trying to make it more elegant. I've set it so you can add your rows and columns to the engine object, which will populate the list object with the correct amount of numbers as well as the right number of cards, so you just need to add your animations. I was hoping someone can come up with a way to use a variable in the engine object to automatically do the card spacing and alignment.
Also, a problem since the first incarnation of the code is that after a "no match," there's a little hiccup where it takes a couple ticks before another card can be flipped. I have no idea what's causing this, but probably something to do with the common twitchy animation bug. Any ideas?

As for card spacing, it seems you already got it working well, am I wrong?
Maybe you want to scale cards when things get too "crowded"?

just adding "only one action when event loops" to line 9 fixes this issue :)
EDIT: in first incarnation I remember setting up a "pause" timer, that had a 1 second delay to actually show flipped cards and prevent multiple flipping, I think that was a different issue, but with the same "freezing" ending result XD
Yep, adding that limitation to line 9 fixed it!
As for the spacing, I was looking for a way to sort and center the cards based on the card dimensions, the screen dimensions, and the desired spacing between the cards, all by changing one variable in the engine. This might be wishful thinking.

I've now added the "auto spacing" feature:

You can set the "spacing percentage ratio" in the Flip Engine alt.vals. to determine how much will the cards scale, and also "stick" each other (100=sticky cards!)
This should take in account screen dimension and number of rows/columns.
Sorry I splitted in two the onloop card creation event again, maybe this is less elegant, but I find more comfortable with positioning this way >:)
@ Emerson: I would consider implementing this latest "enhanced" incarnations of the code, for if you're still using the first versions, fixing (I'm mainly thinking at the "flip pause" issue) would become a little tricky!
But maybe you've already done other changes (I guess the time counter?) so... well, it's up to you ;)
Oh, I was also thinking...
the code would be obviously broken when specifying more cards (rows*columns) than the available pre-set animations
So maybe we should also fix this XD
....considering not implementing a fixed number of couples, but a dynamic number,
based on total number of cards / total number of available animations
but only when the number is even.... to have always a straight pair of cards...
