Proud to present! My first Clickteam Game ever!

It's been a long journey to get to this point! I first want to thank Clickteam and the forum community for helping me create my very first game. This project began in a break room at my job, which is Rope, Soap 'N Dope. We're an Industrial, Oilfield supply company. My coworkers and I get together every day and brainstorm new ideas for inventions, business, sports, everything. In 2014, we released our website, RopeSoapNDope.com. Wanting to promote and move on top of google search, I thought "what can I do to increase web traffic?" And then I thought, "What if I can make a Rope, Soap 'N Dope game, put it on our website, and get people to play and stay on our website! Great idea! But how the heck do I create a video game. Lol! Thank God that we had a part time worker who told me about Multimedia Fusion! I was dumbfounded! I couldn't believe that I could make my own video game! Well a year later, I am here to share my game. I'm not 100% finished. But the whole game is playable and I want to share and thank Clickteam for what I created so far. I have many more ideas and dream games I can't wait to start and beyond happy to finish this first project. Please play, give me feedback on bugs or suggestions, and hopefully have fun! you made about a dozen games in there!

A little thing I've quickly noticed: after start screen, you jump to race game,
I guess there was a mismatch in jump-to-frame event XD

Or maybe RSD race is so cool you can't wait to play that :D

What may be the hard step now:
how were you thinking to bring these games for users to play online?
Download & play offline / browser games..?

another idea you may consider (if I didn't miss that!)
adding some quick "instructions / user controls" screen for each minigame
so players quickly know what key press to do things X)

Schrodinger: Great suggestion! On every mini game "title screen," there should be control instructions. I may have missed some, will check. But I think your right, I should probably put user controls on the mini games themselves just to avoid confusion!

This game creation journey was and still is such a time consuming, rewarding experience. I wouldn't be anywhere near completion of my first game without the forum's help!

Congratulations on creating your first game, but how come you haven't compiled it? I didn't want to get all those extensions that were missing for me, but I'll certainly try it if you provide a compiled version :)

Thanks! Honestly, I don't know how to compile. Lol! Is that the final process like uploading the game onto a server via HTML5? Or am I completely lost? I didn't even think about others having to download those extensions.

In this case compiling is when you make an exe or upload a playable HTML5 game etc. An end product we can play without having to open Fusion:)

Great! Well I'm pretty close to completion. I just wanted to share and get opinions/beta test what I've been working on! Next is compiling my game with HTML5! Excited!

Thanks Perry! I like that, "Game Palace!" When I first started on this idea, it was just going to be the one "deliver game" frame, where your drive and toss packages at buildings. Then I had another idea for another mini game that I started working on and then another and another, until I had many frames and not an idea of how I was going to connect them. XD. But, I finally thought about the central "overworld" hub that connects all the mini games. Thank you for playing and responding. Although my first game, I put many hours into learning and creating so it's humbling and refreshing to hear feedback!

Useless side notes: The game "Puckitt" is best played with two people. It may look simple in design but if you're a competitor, it's addicting fun! Play with a friend, coworker, or your spouse. We have many tournaments at work with this game, sometimes for money!

The delivery game 2 reminds me of classic NES games. If you like hard challenges with only 3 lives and zero odds of survival, take the challenge! I'll hi five you if you get to end! Also, the player in the game is our real life delivery driver. XD

The race car game was the most time consuming hardest game to grasp/code. Shcrodinger really helped me out on this one and the Match 2 card game!

Big props to Schro's skills and time! Also Ziplock, Snail, Nivram, DaveC, Casleziro, ProdigyX, DavidN, and the forum in general really helped me out on understanding many concepts and gave great tips! Thanks for anyone who plays!

I'm curious on your next "server" step - will you build an HTML5 version of the game palace to share online?
Hope all extensions/functions used will be supported.
And I see from your badges you may not have still the HTML5 exporter - your wife won't be happy XD

Thank you for your kind words, it's fun and instructive making examples and testing Fusion around the forum needs,
and very often gives you different views on what you're doing with your own projects, making you walk on different grounds,

Yup, have to spend more money for HTML5, but hey I plan on making games with Clickteam for life! The original plan was to use our website server to host the game but that plan might change so I need to start from the beginning. Do you have any guides that you've seen in the past or tips for getting this game playable?

Well if you plan in doing HTML5 export, I'd say it's pretty straight forward.
Clickteam did a great job :)

You can definitely use your company server,
you'll just need to export the HTML5 file(s) once you got the exporter,
load them in a couple directories in the server
if needed, customize the HTML template to add your logo or whatever
and you're mosty done - people *should* be able to play your game inside their (HTML5 compatible) browsers!

*should*: some things may not be supported by HTML5 exporter,
so you'd have to thoroughfully test your exported files and find potential bugs / solutions

Also, I've never tested exporting such a big sized game,
hope exporter is already optimized to only let users download single specific frames on need
(I'm pretty new to the exporter and I've no clue about this).

Second thing to consider: integration of online shared scoreboards etc. may vary depending on the system you choose.
I remember you did a online SQL table for the endless runner game scores, you may need to use that solution across other frames too

Well thanks Shcrodinger! Okay, def HTML5 Exporter. Just seems like the way to go! A few questions if you have the time to answer:

1. How would I test the exported file?
2. What do you mean by "hope exporter is already optimized to only let users download single specific frames on need?'
3. What do you mean "use that solution across other frames too" in regards to endless runner scoreboard?

1. you can test it inside fusion (build & run will simulate a local server on your machine)
or build the actual files, upload them to your server, connect with your browser to the html page you just uploaded and... run the game!

2. I have a fear -but I may be totally wrong!- that users would have to download the whole content before playing,
and giving it's about 150 mb, would be a fairly important waiting time.
Don't know if HTML5 exporter already takes care of this, just letting users download specific game parts just when they approach new frames.
I think it would be better in your kind of game - little pauses between frames vs. big pause at the beginning.
maybe there's even an option around for choosing this in the exporter? don't know honestly, never tested such big contents!

3. I was wondering if you would like to add a general online scoreboard for all single games / or total end score,
so your players could upload their best scores for all minigames / total run through the game

Oh great! Can't wait to test.

I hope the exporter can load this size in reasonable time. That would be disappointing if it can't. Being a starter, I don't know a better, less memory extensive way to create this game. Fusion definitely provides many tutorials on how to create easy games, but as far finishing and exporting, I can't really find much on that issue. Facts and tips like this seem important.

General scoreboard on all the mini games would be awesome. However, I'm grown tired of programming this game for one more second. XD Hopefully that means I'm at the end! I would have to think of how to time the mini games such as forklift game, or delivery game etc... Unless it would be really simple like copy and paste from endless runner?

Yeah I can definitely see as one can work so much in something,
while collecting ideas for new projects - being stopped by the need to finish the current one - feels baaad XD
you want a full stop and move to new grounds!
Won't surely suggest extra work if you don't feel the need to XD

(one fast solution could simply be a single scoreboard you would reach at any game over/ game end,
can be the frame you already use for the endless runner,
would collect a single "score" global value shared among all frames,
but then yes, you'd have to add single add-score events in each of your minigames...)

Btw, I just tried exporting your project to HTML5, just to see if things would have gone smooth
(and found the option we were thinking at: "load at start", so you can choose wether to load all at the beginning or load on need
but can't really test this very feature now because I would need to upload this on a webserver, and would take me some extra time..)

The only issues I can see are:

-Text blitter
-File object

These objects are not supported by HTML5.

But I guess they are not strictly needed.
There is a very cool extensionless text-blitter object made by BartekB if you need,
were you using text blitting in dialogues or for less-extensive tasks?

Btw, you were using the file object for..?

Okay, I was using the Text Blitter to make a Game over screen look good. Just erased Text Blitter and created something simple! Now the file object. Oh no! I was using it with an Array to save and load the game. It was the example that Casleziro was helping me with. Hmmm. What now?

I may not be the best one to reply this, as I'm not new to HTML, servers, databases and websites,
...but I'm quite fresh to HTML5 and HTML5 exporter, still not had very much time to experiment.

Afaik, saving and loading an online game can be a quite different thing than doing offline.

You would like each player to be able to save its own progress and retrieve it later?

Tbh, I still never tried to save arrays from HTML5 pages into local machines,
I don't know if it is possible at all to store files in the user local machine from HTML5 "sandbox" and then retrieve back data (i.e. like a cookie)
(..would be interested to know, if anyone bumps in with an answer XD)

Or you could possibly give unique IDs to your players and save all datas in your server.

How much data are you saving now in the array?

You could even consider using the same database you are already using for online scores.

But you would need:
1) to give players an authenticating system, so your database know who they are when they come back
2) to save their IPs, but these may easily change so won't be a solid solution
3) use cookies to store a token in their machine, and then retrieve them to authenticate

If data amount to store/retrieve is very limited (i.e. game level reached),
you could consider a password system to entirely avoid saving data and save yourself some hassle XD

I doubt the array is saving much data. It just saves if mini game one has been completed, unlock mini game two etc... It doesn't save positions at all. Password system like classic Mega Man would be funny to implement. XD. I remember having to draw those little ball things on a grid. Hahaha. If anyone can jump in that has saved and uploaded their game with HTML5 and arrays, please lend your help. This is a big part for me learning Fusion!

Seems there's no problem in saving arrays in HTML5
clickteam guys just thought of everything XD

See this very quick test I did:

write something in the edit box, hit "save"

then hit "load"

you should see the text pop in again in the edit box

The text is retrieved from an array file, saved and loaded back - seems there's no problem in saving it!

I guess it directly goes to the browser's cookies (or more probably local storage? as cookies size is very limited),
because I can't retrieve it from a different browser - this saves in a new session in new browser.

Cool to know!

I'll come back next days to check these "cookies" lifespan.


And you won't need the file object to do this :)

just made some further researches,
since I was unable to locate the data stored by the browser in my machine
and found this paragraph in HTML5 exporter documentation:


Files
. Javascript cannot write or read any file on the machine of the user.
It can save and read data in a specific browser-dependant folder,
and read data directly from the web server where the application is located.
The Edit, List, Combo and Ini objects first try to load the data from a previous data section saved by the application. If they cannot find it, they will try to load it from the binary file section of the application. If the file cannot be loaded from there, they will try to load the file from the web server (the file should be located beside the html file).
Unlike the Windows runtime, the HTML5 runtime only takes the name and extension of the file into account when retrieving the file : the path and drive are ignored.


So we would rely on a browser-specific folder, and -I guess- browser specific cleaning times.
In short - can't be sure on the lifetime of your save file,
if the users cleans browser stored data, or if the browser auto-cleans its data after specific time intervals.

Will check back next days to see how much my saved test string will survive.

That is so exciting and brings me to this option. I created the game as a progressive type where the player unlocks the next mini game after completing the previous one. At the end of the game, the player unlocks a bonus room where they can play all the mini games as much as they want without having to play through story mode. I wrestled with the idea at the start game, load game screen, to have an option where they can play all the mini games without story mode. If the browser auto cleans and erases data then I might have to create this option since it'll be time consuming to finish the game in one sitting!

Just purchased HTML5 Exporter. Now it's time to figure this out and release game!

I'm doing some research to see how this data is stored (this is interesting for my future projects too)
and seems like HTML5 data is stored in a "local storage" resource specific to single browsers.

To see what's inside your Internet Explorer storage,
you can hit F12, go to "console", type "localStorage" (in the bottom line of the page) and hit enter.

You will be prompted a string containing currently "stored" content on the browser,
and here's our array:

Since I use Firefox for browsing, this storage here on explorer is completely clean but for the array I saved yesterday.

Tried clearing cookies, removing history and temporary internet files, still my browser retains the data,
so I guess this won't be that easy to clear.
Not sure if would last "forever", but I guess this may be considered pretty solid.

Will keep testing and going in depth on this!

Very informative and it sounded like my data would be reserved and stored for easy reopening! I don't have my windows computer with me, left at home, so I will download when I get home tonight. Once I have it loaded, since I'm furthering your research >:), if you don't mind I'll need some help learning how to use the exporter to test/upload game! Thanks Schrodinger for your research!

Yeah, sure,
HTML5 is probably the most straightforward among exporters I've tried,
you'll just need to remove those two unsupported extensions (text blitter and file object),
select the HTML5 build type in "application properties", launch the build,
and then move all files you'll get by Fusion in a remote folder on your server.

If any need let us know,
I'm pretty confident you'll get your game online without too much struggle :D

Step 1: On the app page, go to Customize & Control menu> More Tools> Developer Tools> Resources> Local Storage> <appURL>.

Step 2: Game.ini is the INI file.

There is a list of services (with Fusion instructions) located here.
If you plan embed your app in a webpage I recommend Google Drive, otherwise I recommend BitBalloon.

The only extension that wasn't in ExtPack2 was color dodge. I just ignored it, and haven't noticed when you used it. Out of curiosity, why didn't you just compile an exe and throw it on mediafire or something?

Well thanks Ziplock! I put in many hours into learning and making this. And learned from your examples and posts in others.

I honestly don't know where color dodge is myself. Lol. I know it's cliche about no programming and create games with Clickteam but I fit that mold. I truly am a beginner when it comes to computers, uploading files, html, programming, exe, everything. I'm starting from the bottom. Clickteam has opened my eyes not only to making games, which I'm more than thrilled about, but about learning software, hardware, and computers in general. I just got HTML5 so soon I'll finish my touch ups on my game and finally be finished with it! I appreciate everyone's tips and guidance!

PS. I watched a video of that guy playing your Jumpman game. That's freaking awesome. Looks challenging. Will play when I'm done with my game!
