finding all the combinations

Currently with some of my slot games, I am checking for win combinations, by doing Every combination possible.
But wondering if there is an easier way.

Let's say I have 3 reels.
each real is 3 images

so
Reel 1 = 1,2,3
Reel 2 = 4,5,6
Reel 3 = 7,8,9

So I am checking for 1,4,7 / 2,4,7 / 3,4,7 / 1,5,7 / 1,5,7 etc etc etc

since I can have win combination if I have 2 of the same symbols on reel 1, 1 on reel 2 and 3 on reel 3.
so I end up with a lot of combo's.. is there an easier way for checking ??

Hi Perry try this site it's great for working it out automatically and you can check to get rid of duplications. I don't think there's an easier way, unfortunately to check all combo's you need to check all combo's.

I know I have to check all the combo's, but currently make an event for each one if them.
Like

If 1 and 4 and 7 = 1 then Cherry+1
if 1 and 4 and 8 = 1 then Cherry+1
.....
if 2 and 5 and 9 = 1 then Cherry+1
.....
if 3 and 6 and 9 = 1 then Cherry+1

and repeat all of them for 13 symbols

was hoping that there would be an easier way..

Perry could you try explaining to a slot-layman XD like me what you are exactly doing,
I find it difficult to grasp

you have three reels (vertical scrolling images?)
that can take up to (9?) values each (each value represent an image= cherry, bell, star..)

you have to check all winning combinations -
these combinations are predetermined?
or "automatically" defined? (like two of a symbol and any other - three of any symbol)


I don't understand this:

Reel 1 = 1,2,3
Reel 2 = 4,5,6
Reel 3 = 7,8,9

this means that each reel contains only those elements,
or that's an example - each reel is currently displaying those values, or...?

You see - I'm a bit confused, hopefully with some clarification some idea could pop out :pacman::pacdot::pacdot: :pacdot:

You could try having all those number combinations as lines in a list object. Choose 1 line at random and force the slot tumblers to the result. Then you know the result of each tumbler and can have a simple set of events for each tumbler's result.

Maybe this is way off but what do you need to do this check for?

Each real has 3 images.

If I have like 5 lemons. on 1,2,6,8 and 9

then the winning combinations are

1,6,8
1,6,9
2,6,8
2,6,9

If I had bars on 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

then it's
1,4,7
1,5,7
1,6,7
1,4,8
1,5,8
1,6,8
2,4,7
2,5,7
2,6,7
2,4,8
2,5,8
2,6,8
3,4,7
3,5,7
3,6,7
3,4,8
3,5,8
3,6,8

so it add up pretty quickly.
Since there are 13-14 symbols, I need to repeat that for every symbol..

this was the part I completely overlooked XD

have you considered working with "vertical" reels?
I'm under the impression you handle reels "horizontally"
this makes checking winning combinations a lot trickier, I think

say you have reels A,B,C
each vertical reel has its own combination of symbols, ranging from 1-14
(or each reel has the same exact symbol set/order of the others, makes no difference)

start of game
say each reel had the same symbolset, a bland succesion: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14
then if needed each reel can get a random offset (say +0,+2,+5),
and now you can see (imagine this flipped by 90 degrees):

A: 1,2,3
B: 3,4,5
C: 6,7,8

note: differently from your representation, each number here represents a different symbol, not a different position!

then you simply need to compare the three rows in three conditions
(x different winning combinations: say 2 or 3 in a rows >>> x 2)
you have about 9-10 events for all winning combinations

you wouldn't need to know all winning combinations beforehand
to determine win situations


unless you need to know the number of winning combinations you can have...
but then you would look into some offline permutation formula like the ones posted by aenever
no need to make this calculation in runtime

I need all the Cherry combinations. from left to right
in this example, there are 8 combinations

How would you do that then?

But how do you determine exactly the "winning combinations"?
Like, you win when:

a) you have three same symbols on any single row

b) you have some predetermined combination of same symbols, spanning in more rows
i.e.
same symbol appears twice on row 1, twice on row 2, one or more times in row 3

c) ...other?

I could make an example later this evening with the idea I was talking above
(and then see if could actually work/relief some pain XD)

So I made a quick example, for a simple situation:

win event in yellow, here it only checks wether each row has all same symbols
but you get the idea on how can be quick checking for winning situations (only 5-6 events)
then you could add more complex situations in the check_wins loop

As for the general idea on the slot mechanics,
you can customize slot reels in the list object
(simply enter a comma separated list of "symbols" for each of the three rows,
each symbol is linked to the relative animation frame of the slot_symbol object)
you can have any combination of symbols, and any slot reel length
(each reel can be undefinitely long and different from the others, but no less than 4 entries)

up direction of slot_symbol is the "winning line" animation

test events allow you to "cheat" with 1,2,3 keyboard keys

I put the string parser is there to allow more complex tricks with strings
(i.e. you could need its "wildcard searching" function for more advanced checking of win situations)
...but I don't know what you exactly need to do with winning situations X)

in this case I think it's B. If there are 3 of the same symbols in each row then it's a win. no matter where they are.. so the more of the same symbols, the more winlines you have

so if it looks like this

x-o-o
x-x-x
0-x-x

then
x-0-0
0-x-x
o-o-o is a win

o-o-o
x-o-x
o-x-o is also a win.

With other words, it's not a straight line

Yep, that is what i am looking for, now I need to figure out your code how it all works, so it tells me, how many win lines there are, vs how many of the same symbols are on the screen.

It could be straight lines, but also every other line in any order. as long if there are 1 or more of the same symbols in each reel. See post 11
Now it shows like that there are 5 symbols matching

there are 8 win combinations for 3 4's .

* (number of occurrences reel 2)
* (number of occurrences reel 3)

?

If so, you could easily have it with the string parser numberofsub function,
use it for every reel (column) subsequently
and multiply by the previous

Wow amazing schrodinger, what a time saver. I must admit it makes my head hurt though, too clever for me.

I know right... I am still figuring it all out.. all those formulas is making my head spin more then the slot machine :)

If I am able to figure it out, then it will save a HUGE amount in file size, since I only need 1 active vs. 6 actives with each 60 frames, which add up in the file size..

His code is amazing, and I thought I was good at it, but he puts it together while it took me weeks to figure something out properly... except it's a lot more events haha..

I could add some more comments if it can help,
(and maybe make the example just slightly more flexible so you can easily customize slot size / spacings and use the code for a project if you want)

let me know if something's particularly more "obscure" than the rest and needs clarification

String functions make it way faster solving logical questions like these,
helping you code a logical method like your mind would do,
and computers make these iterative approaches (i.e. test all matches x symbol) zillions time faster than our minds X)

I've worked much with databases/SQL, I think it really helps having a good "structure view" of problems,
and finding creative solutions using what you have (sequences of symbols structured in rows/columns)
plus the fact I've never made -nor played, beside SMB2..- a slot game
maybe helped by giving a "fresh-unbiased" approach XD

So I've refined a bit this example because I had fun doing it and there was some missing feature,
plus it was a bit awkward to customize.... now it has quick and easy chance of customization

it's a bit more code, but in all the core non-optional code is about 20 events,
so it's still pretty short I'd say

- you can customize number of rows, or "slot symbols shown" (no limit)

- and number of columns, or "reels" (currently max. 8, would require some in-depth change rising this)

- you can customize vertical and horizontal spacings inbetween symbols

- you can freely drag-n-drop the slot_symbol object around to position the whole slot anywhere you like

- you can customize slot symbols dimensions and the slot machine will be automatically created to fit those dimensions
(i.e. simply try dragging-resizing the "slot symbol" in the frame editor)

The "winning test" currently does what Perry was doing

would need some in depth modifications to fit other different "winning tests".

I've added comments to explain how to do customizations,
but not much to explain the code, so if any question drop a line
