Detecting closest object between multiple objects

So I have multiple Object A and multiple Object B. I want each Object A to go towards the Object B closest to them. I've found several examples and tutorials on this, but they all require the Select Tool Extension, which is not compatible in CTF.
Surely there must be some other way of doing this? Been trying all day for two days now to make this work and there's always an issue with every approach I attempt. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Yes, you can do this without extensions, you just need a foreach loop :)
(a bunch of foreach loops if you have multiple objects A)

here's the steps you can follow:
(might probably be quicker just making an mfa, but let's see..)


(each time you want to perform this check)
i.e. "always"
>>> set alt. value (nearest_dist) of object A to 9999999
>>> start loop for each one of "object B", loop name "find_nearest"


on each one of "B", loop name "find_nearest"
+ odistance("object A", X(object B), Y(objectB) ) < alt. value "nearest_dist" (of object A)
>>> set alt. value (nearest_dist) of object A to odistance("object A", X(object B), Y(objectB) )
>>> set alt. value (pick_nearest) of object A to fixed value of object B


(same timing as above, i.e. if "always" you can simply omit and: )
object B fixed value = alt. value "pick_nearest" of object A
>>> (object A) look at 0,0 from object B


you could optimize this a little, but you probably would be fine with this as well

(btw, I think the select object extension is compatible with CTF,
but it is not available through the extension manager, and is possibly a bit outdated)

Hey thanks so much! This looks perfect! I'm not sure how to get "+ odistance("object A", X(object B), Y(objectB) ) < alt. value "nearest_dist" (of object A)". Do I use the advanced direction object?

ODistance is a builtin function of fusion, you don't need additional objects :)

use the "compare two general values" condition (under "special object")

and then click on object A >> Position >> Distance with a point

or you can simply write down in the expression editor:

ODistance( "your object exact name", X of other object, Y of other object )

I may have messed something up. They're still all going for the same object. Is this supposed to work for multiple object As?

it was done for single A - multiple B

for multiple A's you need some modifications (an additional foreach loop, an additional "temp" value)

don't know how I could have overlooked that..
anyway, here's the version for multiple A's :

(used some global values, but not needed, you could use a "single" object alt. values if you prefer
but you better not use A's values for picking instance/distance test, as now we have multiple copies of those)
