Ah also before I forget, collisions with some existing active objects also stop working? As in, ones placed in clickteam's editor. I feel this might be an easy fix and I've overlooked something.

VACCiNE 2 on the click store is pretty handy. Once you get your head round it, you can program once for 4 types of input at once. (For example, D-pad right, Thumbstick right, D, and right arrow key)
Hmm, you're along the right lines, I would have done something like that as well. Some of the movements like to cause trouble.
Yeah about the clicks, its a bit annoying, but you can remedy it...

Theres various ways you can get him to stop; simplest way would probably be :
-Animation melee is playing
+set speed to 0
Had to Google orange juice, but I think you could definitely pull this off in fusion. The main advantage with fusion is it's a lot quicker to create stuff, but theres also slightly more updated...

If you're using pixel sprites, the resolution doesn't hinder the quality of the sprites really. The resolution does make everything smaller or bigger, depending on what you go with, so play around...
