welcome to the community.

made you a quick example. Far from perfect but you get the idea. Waypoints for NPC1 and NPC2 are created relative to the player's path.

Here is another method which allows you to specify the distance.

Basically you always check the distance between the NPC and the Player. Then if the distance becomes to great (in this example 32 pixels, but you can change this) you move the NPC towards the player at the same speed as the player.

You can apply any sort of movement (with accel/decel) to smooth out the effect as well.
