How would you make the camera's view look flat?

I'm working on a game with a level editor, but the cursor (which is an empty cube) can get hidden behind things and it doesn't follow the mouse well. I want to make it so that while it is in edit mode, the camera will change to a flat view to make it easier to see where you are placing things. Does anyone know how I could achieve this effect?

hard to tell without images - but you could hide everything between the mouse and the camera so that you can see it better

I want to make an effect like this where it switches from a flat view to a 3D view without sacrificing the 3D models and lighting effects.

(Sorry about how crude it looks)
