Question This lighting effect was possible on MMF?

Hello! I saw this on Twitter and wondered if this kind of night lighting effect was possible on MMF? If for example my character at a light source he places a torch against a wall that this source attaches to the existing one. Well exactly as we can see in the Twitter Gif here!

It’s a simple subtract layer with light bulbs around the actors that were tuned down to three shades (plain black and 2 black with transparency) to get the clean retro look. Make a layer with FX substract on top of your playfield. Then put a white background on it covering the whole scene (will appear black with the FX on the layer) and pair light bulbs in black + transparent margins with each object you want to emit. If the margins with transparency overlap the black values add up resulting in a stronger substract (more light) like in the example.

I don't think it's simply subtract though.. because the levels of transparency stay consistent even with multiple layers overlapping.. subtract will make each light source stack on top of the next, which means if 2 light sources touch, where they intersect will be slightly brighter

Yeah, you’re right! I think you could still achieve it with substract only tho. You would need to stack a black bulb and two grey bulbs without transparency upon each other and make sure the darker bulbs always layer on top of the lighter greys.

That dev is using unity which has much better support for lightning, but you can get similar effects by using techniques and effects mentioned above. Almightyzentaco has a good lightning tutorial on youtube
