Question How to make an isometric game?

I have made quite a few games, but for my next game I would really want to make a game in the isometric viewpoint. I realize though that I have no idea on how to achieve it, how do I make so characters are layered properly in front or behind objects depending on their positions? I have attached an image and a mfa of a moving player, but how do I make it work like in the image?

Is there any tutorials out there on how to make isometric games?

Thank you, these are nice examples, but is there any more clean on just how to handle being behind and in front of objects? Also I noticed in all these examples the character moves in strict grids, while for me I want the player to move completely freely in all directions without any grid so I don't know if that would change things?

It is harder with those in front of/behind things . I remember that was the worst part about doing the isometric perspective. I did a crapload of "player is in zone x,y" but that is tedious. Another way is to do masks for all areas. I usually do that for obstacles, one large active that works as the obstacle for the whole area. I load them externally. Anyway, when player is overlapping that mask/active object ---> Player is in front, and another. Player is NOT overlapping mask/active object ---> player is behind. This of course is also a little tedious but at least it gets you out of all zone checks

    Thanks Nivram!

I used one of your examples and stripped it down a bit to the bares. It works well, however I have one problem, while it works very well when the houses are apart, if a few houses are close together I found that the ordering has problem.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I attached a modified example. You will see the problem if trying to go in between the 2 houses at the bottom.
