Why setting sample volume sets the channel volume?

Not sure if this is intended behaviour or not but I find it odd.

When I modify a sample volume, it actually changes the volume of the underlying channel. Is that correct?

EDIT: The same applies for Frequency, and that is quite annoying. Even though I set a frequency of a sample, the frequency change REMAINS on the channel, affecting all the other samples played later.

Changing the sample volume also does not work.

This problem makes using sample-specific settings (volume, freq..) useless as you would need to reset the channel after each sample.
