    clarification about number of flags

So how many flags are there? Fusion's dialog says that there are just 32:

...but this is misleading. There are 32 that you can name, but after 32 you can still use them - you just can't name them. They seem to work fine, and Fusion even has a different name for them: "internal flags".

It seems that there are 255 of them in total: "Flag 0" to "internal flag 254". Any flag after that seems to just affect flag 254 (eg. you can set "internal flag 99999" if you want, but it'll actually just set flag 254).

Is this all correct? And are these internal flags fine to use (apart from not being able to name them)?

There are only 32 flags, 0 to 31. In the original (and current) implementation, flags 32 to 63 are actually flags 0 to 31 (same for flags 64 to 95, etc). No idea why this was done like this, there is probably a certain use for this in some cases...

    Oh, I see. I'm glad I asked.

Is there a reason why flags 32 onwards are called "internal flag"? The unique name made me think that they must be a special type of flag that works, albeit differently, since surely Fusion wouldn't give them a special name if they weren't a real thing.

Hmm, though now I'm guessing that this is perhaps a legacy name, and once upon a time, all flags were called "internal flag"....and that when the flags got a new name, these non-working ones never got updated so kept the legacy name.

Yes, probably this reason. I'll check.

I don't know if this suggestion has legs, but maybe you could have Fusion automatically apply a mod 32 to how it displays these internal flags, so that there wouldn't be ambiguity about how many of them there are. You'd enter 40 in the dialog box, but the event would immediately say "internal flag 8", and the user would have no illusions about which flag it really was.

This wouldn't work so well past 255, because I believe every single 'flag' with a number above 255 just points to 255. But anyone who's trying to set flags beyond 255 is probably half-expecting that it may not work, so I don't think that would be a problem.
