Install program?

In what case would you make an install program for your game and what's the difference between installing the program and just running it?

    Re: Install program?

It's possible your game/application requires some setups like something in the registry (or what ever it's called). Maybe your game/app requires a font? Anything that has to go somewhere else requires a setup. People are lazy.

Other problem is, people don't want desktop or Start Menu shortcuts or anything. I prefer the setups that just unpack stuff.

Yeah, if you are just releasing a little arcade game or something, nothing beats a good zipping (except maybe a good 7zipping). I'm saying make a .zip file of your exe.

Most professional software you get tends to come with an installer. The benefits are that the installer can do some stuff like automatically extract fonts and things into their proper folders. It can also make a start-menu item for your program.

For example, MS Office or Open Office do this. That's all good and nice for software you will be using a lot.

Just be sure not to be too stuck up about your smaller programs/games. If it's just a little thing you made in a few days, and chances are most people will want to get rid of it within 5 minutes of playing (let's be honest. The first games I made were god aweful.), don't make them go through the trouble of clicking Next 5 times and then digging through their start menu to get to your pong-clone. Just zip the exe and put that on your website. Even if people hate your game, they'll appreciate being effortless "installation" / removal of it.

The best thing to do if you got installers on your mind is to release your game both as a zip of all files, and as an installer. People can then choose their favorite method. Once your game gets really popular, you can always stop distributing it as a zip later.

    Re: Install program?

Hmm...I was thinking of releasing it in both zip and installer. A simple one-frame game would be good for a zip folder, but a complex multiplayer/singleplayer RPG with split screen would need to be installed. Thanks for the info.

I agree. I get really annoyed when I have to install a tic-tac-toe game.

This debate's been going over at the Daily Click for ages - personally I prefer to download ZIPs of Click games, as rarely do they need to install anything outside of one folder and subfolders.
