    Copy Protection of Installer File

    Hi,

I've written an MMF application and created an install file for it using Install Creator Pro, and am now in the process of getting copies of the software manufactured on CDs. However, I'd like to copy protect the installer file on the CD i.e. to ensure the install file on the CD cannot be copied.

I was hoping to use SecuROM from Sony but they have told me their software doesn't work on the install file because it has already been packed in UPX format.

Sony have asked if we can send them the unpacked file instead. Is this possible to do? Also, do you know of any other copy protect software solutions that work with Install Creator Pro, and/or how this could be achieved?

    Thanks,

    Mike

Yes, you can unpack the installer with UPX. Download it from http://upx.sourceforge.net/#download, extract UPX.exe from the zip file, copy it to the directory of your installer, and then open a command prompt window (open the Start menu, select Run and enter cmd), go to the directory of your installer (cd x:\etc.\yourdirectory) and type:

    UPX -d yourinstaller.exe

It will uncompress the runtime of the installer (should add between 50 and 100 Kb to its size).

The version used to compress the IC installers is an older version, but it should work anyway. Let me know if any problem.

BTW, check if your installer still works after unpacking it. If it doesn't work, let me know, I'll send you the version of UPX used for ICP.

Re: Copy Protection of Installer File

    Hi Yves,

Thanks for your suggestion - I've downloaded UPX and it unpacked a test install file without any problems. However, when I ran it against the true install file I got an error saying the file had not been packed by UPX.

The test install file when packed is 618K in size whereas the true installer is 110M. Does Install Creator Pro not use UPX above a certain file size limit or do you think this is a bug in in the UPX unpacker? I tried two versions of the UPX unpacker 2.02 and 1.25, but both gave the same results.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Yes, I confirm Install Creator doesn't UPX install programs above 10 Mb.

If I remember correctly we had to do that because when a file was UPXed, McAfee Anti-Virus was scanning it entirely (including the data after the executable part) each time the directory was listed... It was OK for a 10 Mb file but for 110 Mb McAfee AV was taking a long time.

Thanks - I'll see if SecuROM will work on the 110M install file.

    Are you?
    -------------------------------

I can't seem to find if it's free or not.
Anyway, i think installing services for copyprotection that might messup someones system (accoring to the wikki) is not a good idea.
