How to handle fonts using multiple languages?

Im setting up my app using an .ini as a language file.

I would like to display strings (player name, etc) but have no idea how to handle users having different fonts.

Originally i planned on using English, Spanish, French & German but recieved the suggestion to include Russian as well.

    How have others handled this?
Is there a list of 'generic' fonts for diff languages that I should be using?

I thought that 'Times new roman' and all the other basic fonts like 'arial' had all the wierd characters in them.

Things will get tricky though, remember that a plain text file can not contain most special characters. The file will have to be saved into a format which supports more characters. When savinga file with windows notepad, you can actually select how to encode the text. ANSI is the standard, but doesn't support many characters. Unicode should work a whole lot better, it covers almost a huge number of languages.

The only problem is that I have not tested if MMF2 can actually read it from a file as a string, and I don't know if the string object can display it. You will probably have to use an extension or two.
