    Pan Camera Engine

This is a Camera Engine I designed. I think its flawless, but I'll let you decide. I call it the PAN CAM. It is simple code, but very powerful. You can customize it to fit the needs of your game/application with alterable values.

This download illustrates one way how it can be used.

    Re: Pan Camera Engine

That is a really smooth engine

It could also make a very effective movement engine aswell

    I have always used
    [events]
    *Always
-Set X Position of "CAM" to X( "CAM" )+(X( "PAN" )-X( "CAM" ))/10
-Set Y Position of "CAM" to Y( "CAM" )+(Y( "PAN" )-Y( "CAM" ))/10
    [/events]
Which avoids the alterable values but cannot calculate velocity so it can never go past the Object in the direction it is travelling

    Pretty cool
This example makes me wanting to create a 'lost vikings' clone...
...Now that I think of it I might just do that after my current project.

    Thanks for sharing.

    That is pretty smart.

Could see this being used by a few people.

    Re: Pan Camera Engine

The only trouble is that when you are moving quickly you cannot see where you are going. I normally counter this by taking the XY velocities of the subject into acount to scroll the screen in front of the players direction of movement, as well as using a smooth scrolling algorithm (otherwise the scrolling jitters horribly on collisions).

The engine is pretty cool, but the scrolling part of it can all be done in a single line. I have attached an example of the way I would achieve the same effect.

Christ the MMF 2 default platformer movement is even more broken than it was at MMF 1.5. Maybe they'll just leave it out altogether next time

Exactly what I mean. As I said before, this method cannot calculate velocity so it can never go past the Object in the direction it is travelling.
