    Re: No more MIDI music!

I'm running into problems with TGF2 and even, yes, the old-school original TGF demo. I could play MIDI's in the past on an older computer, but it's not working now. I was redirected here. I was also told to post my laptop specs:

OS: Windows XP Pro Media Center Edition 2005
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 1.86 GHz
    RAM: 1028 RAM
Graphics: Some special kind... has 128 VRAM

I ran this in the past on a less powerful computer and had no problems with MIDI's.

While it is most difficult to ascertain what the cause of the problem is, and Yves has to look into this on our end ...

Right off the bat, one could suspect soundcard/driver issues enough to ask everyone to note what soundcard, (and current driver versions) the computers that are having problems are using.

    That could prove helpful/useful.

    Re: No more MIDI music!

Try having your MIDIs start a second or so after level start? Maybe have a wave file as a shift effect as a spacer.

@ OP: Sometimes codec packs can cause conflicts... is it just MMF2, or can you not hear MIDIs in other program?

If it helps get started on the comparing of specs, my home computer uses Realtek (AC97) drivers, and my laptop uses SoundMAX - both of these play music and sound in MMF fine.

    Re: No more MIDI music!

I tried to force my MIDI to start a second or so after level start, but it didn't work. I can, however, run .wav files just fine. I even have a sound effect going to my character's sword. But no music in MIDI format.

Here are my sound card specs. I don't know what all they mean, so I'm just going to randomly post them:

    Device Name: SigmaTel Audio
    Driver Name: sthda.sys
    Driver Version: 5.10.5082.0000 (English)
    Driver Date: 6/15/2006

I have four music ports on my computer. Currently the SigmaTel is my default. Here's a readout on all four.

    Microsoft Synthesizer:
    o Type: Software
    o Kernel Mode: No
    o In/Out: Output
    o Support DLS: Yes
    o External: No
    o Default Port: Yes

    SigmaTel Audio
    o Type: Software
    o Kernel Mode: Yes
    o In/Out: Output
    o Supports DLS: Yes
    o External: No
    o Default Port: No

    Microsoft MIDI Mapper [Emulated]
    o Type: Hardware
    o Kernel Mode: No
    o In/Out: Output
    o Supports DLS: No
    o External: No
    o Default Port: No

Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth [Emulated]
    o Type: Hardware
    o Kernel Mode: No
    o In/Out: Output
    o Supports DLS: No
    o External: No
    o Default Port: No

    (Edit: Addition)

Also note, I could not play the MIDI's in either TGF2 or the old version, TGF (original).

    Re: No more MIDI music!

This might sound dumb, but make sure the volume is turned up for MIDI in the mixer... I've had some games turn it all the way down for some reason.

Go to Control Panel; Sound and Audio Devices and under the Volume tab click Advanced to get to the mixer.

lucky me! lol, well no issues on this ancient version of XP, none on 2003 without any SPs and sound enabled, and MIDI works even better on both my Memphis PCs, should be good on my laptop too when i can be bothered to fix it :P

Oh man, rocko , you're a genius. I did exactly what you said, and it worked! I started up my TGF and it played the MIDI theme. Everyone should check this.

Here's some more info for anyone, if you want to experiment:

Right click on your volume. Click on "Open Volume Control". Then make sure that the SW Synth is turned up. It worked for me.

    Re: No more MIDI music!

Thanks guys- it was the mixer, and the sw synth tab was all the way down. (For some reason the MIDIs would still play through windows media player, but not MMF2). I guess things screwed up after I had to reinstall my audio drivers...whoops!
