    [Request] RakNet Client Object

This is a request for an MMF2 object that works as a client, using the Raknet C++ library.

RakNet is a network library specifically designed to make it easy to use with game. See http://www.rakkarsoft.com/ for more info.

I've not personally used RakNet due to my lack of C++ experience, but the features are very impressive. Just putting this out there as an idea, considering an Irrlicht extension is being worked on, and this is like the next/previous logical step. haha

Last note: RakNet is free for non-commercial use only, as far as I understand.

    Re: [Request] RakNet Client Object

The Commercial License used to be free (it just required their approval, which they gave most of the time). I guess they changed it to cost however much you feel like paying (at least .

When I looked at the page, it said you can get a plain Commercial License for $100. Not a bad deal if you are actually planning to make something "Commercial"...that will make you money...
    http://www.rakkarsoft.com/PurchaseSAL.html

Yeah, I have no idea where you got $5k from. It's a fee of $100 per commercial license (you can pay more if you feel like it). If you choose to pay $500 or more, the author starts giving you personal C++ coding help. Neat deal, eh? haha

I mean, it's free for freeware. So it doesn't cost you anything until you are completely done with development and are confident enough to start selling your software. At that point, you can afford to pay the commercial license fee. No risk if you are already done using it, and know exactly what you got out of it.

If you are making freeware... it's free to use forever and as much as you want. So yeah, I don't think it's a problem.

Does it only support UPD, and not TCP?

    Re: [Request] RakNet Client Object

    In the FAQ:
    http://www.rakkarsoft.com/raknet/manual/faq.html
    It says:
Does RakNet use TCP at all?
    No.

    Aw well.
An extension to use RakNet would be useful. How hard would it be to make one?

Yes, RakNet is not for talking to raw sockets. This is to be thought of like...a better MooGame, basically.

RakNet things can talk to other RakNet things, and it's suppose to kick butt for game net code.

Hmm, UPD isnt secure, it may not comes to the target, its a lot faster than TCP but not secure.
Then we need to be carefull how we send data...

    Re: [Request] RakNet Client Object

    You're looking for "reliable".

It depends what data you're sending. If it absolutely must reach the other players / server, use TCP. For continuous updates that don't need to arrive, use UDP. I've seen a game (Space Empires 4) that did simultaneous turn-based multiplayer by sending a savegame by udp, and then leaving the client sitting waiting for the file if a single packet didn't arrive. It didn't even TRY to resend the data.
