Objects on top of Quicktime movies

I was thinking of making a Myst type game and I was wondering if it is possible to have objects on top of Quicktime movies. I know it is possible with .avi files, but those are horrible for large animations.

At the least I need to be able to have the cursor on top of the video.

This doesn't help you with your problem, but I would suggest not using QT. For one, the QT codecs have to be installed and they only have about a 25% penetration (and it's dropping). Second, if you want to distribute the QT installer you have to fill out a long agreement form with Apple an sign over your first born to Steve Jobs.

    I would use MPEG-1 or 2 instead.

25% penetration? What are you talking about? You mean the people that use it? Most people have Quicktime.

Who said I'm going to distribute the installer? That license thing is only if you plan on distributing the installer with your game, and it really isn't that bad. IIRC MPEG-1 and 2 have horrible compression. At least it's better than DivX's $5000 SDK.

Surely the fact nearly everyone in the civilized world owns an iPod and that iPods require iTunes which requires and installs QT means the penetration rate is 1. Greater than 25% and 2. I no way dropping....

Though I think the QT codec is severly out of date that ships with MMF2 but I may be wrong. Was the case with MMF 1.5 anyway.

MMF2 plays the latest version of Quicktime movies fine.

iTunes does not require Quicktime, it's just that most people are too lazy to look around for the stand alone installer, so they just download the whole package. But yea, most people do have Quicktime, or at least a lot more people have Quicktime than something like Bink or DivX.

Quicktime is dropping out of the limelight because of Flash video.

I'm just speaking from experience having released several CD-ROMs in the past 8 years with QT video. It's not fun having to explain to the end user the process of installing the QT codecs, even though you make it painfully easy for them. Your applications should strive to be as seamless as possible for the end-user. They shouldn't have to install a secondary applications to get your's to work. You'll lose too many users that way.

Flash Video? I'm aiming for realism, not cartooney stuff. Besides, I don't have anything that can make flash stuff (wait, what about after effects?)

Alright fine! I'll distribute the damned installer!

EDIT: Wait a minute... don't you have to install stuff for flash video that is HARDER to get at?
