That is a good example but it doesn't accomplish what I need. I want the user to be able to type in text and when a certain word pops up it is put in red. I really need to be able to do this with the rich edit object.

small bug in the example:

Type in the word, erase it, and then type, all text will be red. Should be easy to fix though, just so you know =)

If you type "Here's an Apple." it won't recognize it
Or.. "My name is "Apple"".. or "Have you seen my new Apple?"

Are you putting punctuation after apple? It won't recognize it if you do.

However that is not a problem for what I am doing. Hitting enter is a problem. But I suspect it can easily be fixed on my own.
