We need a better Network extension

I'm planning to make a sequel to my MMORPG, so I need a c++ server with threads and a powerful network library.

MMF2 is great for making the client, I feel; but the only extension I have to chose from is moo sock, which is less than ideal.
A lot of its issues were going to be improved upon with AQSock, but that has been put on long term hold /canceled.

So I'm suck here without a solution. Like I said in the other thread, I would really love to use RakNet, which requires a RakNet-only network solution.
    But I'm not picky!

I would be content with an object that has all the features the AQSock client promised.

PS: If anyone has a solution for a threaded C++ network library that I could somehow talk to with MMF2, please let me know.

I completely agree. The Mooapi is okay, but it really needs UDP support which works. I would really like something faster, but at the same time, we're asking someone to make a whole new extension which takes time and effort.

I'm working on a new socket extension and have been for a while.

Code6 - I don't remember saying aqsock had been canceled, but I do remember asking you to add me on MSN for updates until I get a new site (but you keep disappearing for a long time without a word).

How about using Lua? It has the ability to create sockets and network connections.

The existing extensions aren't so bad, I just wish there were more example files out there. I have seen the examples, and they have helped me to make some "basic" online games, but having a WORKING dead reckoning platform engine would allow many more people to take advantage of the MOO stuff...

Re: We need a better Network extension

ClickerGuy - They're not bad, true. Through the use of good dead reckoning techniques you can make games that work well. However when you compare the mooapi to other online games, it's still slow. The way it sends data (correct me if I'm wrong) is just slower than many other packages. It's particularly noticeable in action games.

The Mooapi supposeably has UDP support in the form of BlastText but I have never seen it working before and it has been reported to not work. The only way to transmit data, besides binary, is to use the SendText method, which uses the TCP protocol. UDP is better for games as packets do not stream, they are not gauranteed... come to think of it maybe I'm thinking about Gauranteed sending vs Non-Gauranteed sending instead of BlastingText vs SendingText. Can someone correct me on that?

TCP must be better for games as it is gauranteed... but the main down is that it's slower than UPD (not gauranteed), however UPD can be used e.g in a topdown game for rotating the character?

Re: We need a better Network extension

The general idea for games is to use TCP for important things like chat, and UDP for things which won't really matter if one or two packets go missing, like movement.

Haha, Jam. Yeah, I am quite the ninja. I live in the shadows. :P
Tracking me down can be difficult, I suppose.
I don't like being on AIM/MSN much, as it mostly means I chat pointlessly about silly things for hours. Coding buddies seems to not be on much.

Didn't mean to put words in your mouth there. What I meant was that your client was on hold, hasn't been worked on lately in favor of your other projects, and to me felt like it was canceled.
That it is not canceled is, of course, my hope. :P
