Compression-wise the OGG is usually better, and sounds better. If I was to make an MP3 extension, I guess it would be for the developers who don't have software to support OGGs. Even though you can easily download open source software online.

MP3s also seem to be more open to hackers, they can retain so much information not noticeable by the developer, that hackers can easily extract.

I think OGG will always be the better sound format for games. MP3 is only really useful if you're going to let your players use custom soundtracks, for example. MP3's a common format, yes, but it doesn't really matter most of the time.

Plus, the best game music usually loops seamlessly, and that's what OGG is for.

True. MP3 can loop seamlessly too though.

I do agree. MP3 truly is the consumer level audio format. It IS used by professionals, but usually only for compatibility reasons.

For some reason, when someone sayd MP3, I instantly think "Amateur" or "Piracy".

OGG Vorbis will always be the developer guy that consumers don't really know about.

If you are intending to develop any kind of application where users would need to play their own audio files (media player springs to mind) then you have to support the industry standard format which is mp3. It's unrealistic to expect eveybody to convert their entire audio collection just so they can work with your application!

I for one would welcome an mp3 plugin. I simply cannot create the application I need without it. Any ideas about when this plugin will be ready?

It all depends, Jeff did say a new SDK audio filter will be completed soon, so I can't exactly say when it'll be done. I might scrap the project all together.

Why is MP3 so important to you? It's not that good. I'm simply making the extension so converting your files isn't needed.

Can't you already play mp3's? I thought the Direct Show object supported it.

    Re: MP3 Object Beginning Development.

Most people like mp3 because is has a high compression and allows for mor songs to be stuffed onto a Portable Music Player of some kind. ut high compression has bad quality, so OGG is better becuase it has better sound quality. But MP3 wins in terms of compression. If only OGGs could be played as music, not samples. I have no idea who it was who said OGG is for samples. Most games use .wav for samples. OGG is normally for music.

It certainly is a sad thing how the big corps don't seem to support Vorbis. Imagine this. If Apple gave the iPod the ability to play Vorbis files, a lot more .ogg's would be flying around the net now.

With that said, games like Quake 4 and Prey use Ogg Vorbis for every kind of sound. Music, effects, voices, etc... And filesize doesn't matter that much either. For instance, a shot from a pistol could be 15kb in both Wave as Vorbis. Without any noticeable difference in quality.

    Max

As I said, MP3 is important as it is the industry standard format (thats audio/multimedia standard, not the games industry). A project with whom I am closely associated are looking to commision a custom media player application. If I could develop it myself in Multimedia Fusion then it could result in a lot less financial outlay for the project.

Metal, I don't 100% agree with your comments. If Apple included ogg support on thier Ipods, I highly doubt we'd see users transferring to the format just because it's there.
