    Platforms/Ledges

I work at a kids tech camp and a few of my kids have had the same problem where the platforms or ledges they have can be jumped into and the characters get stuck. It is usually on games where they have about three platforms at different heights up the frame that are the length of the frame, with a small gap for the player to jump through and they have to jump onto each one to reach the top. Even though I have told the player to stop if he collides with the platforms he still jumps through them and gets stuck. This is very frustrating for me and the kids. Anybody have any ideas??

    Hi Scall.

I've had this problem in the past and the best way around it is to plan you level layout. Once you have your character equipped with movement, run a test to see how high he can jump. Try to make a mental not of what this is on screen. Then, when placing your platforms, place them so that when the character jumps, he jumps up through the platform above him, but does not make contact with the next platform up. That way, he jumps, passes through the first platform, falls back down to land on the first platform, then jumps again and passes through the second platform.

Or, if you must use the default movement, you could have a 1-3 pixel high object that acts as the detector and always place your main char relative to it.

Alternativly, write a custom engine. This probably is the best. Personaly i wouldnt advise detectors, as you can (using some math) do 1px accurate detection. Altough, it may be a bit "to much" for a kids tech camp. Whats the agegroup?
