    i want to make it look like the player is under water. is there a way to make a blue color like a square or somthing so that when the character goes in it makes him slightly darker?

    You could do this by using a semitransparent blue object (look in "Ink effects" in an object's properties), though expect it to be a bit of a performance hit if it's very large.

    Or you could use the subtract effect. That one's pretty popular, too. You'd need to use a yellow-ish color to make it look right.
    The performance hit shouldn't be too bad if you use a backdrop, should it? And, if for whatever reason (I can think of at least one) you want to use, say, an active object you really just need to make it as big as the screen and program it to follow the player (I did this once in MMF 1.5. Worked like a charm). I can whip up an example if you want (I just hope I don't have trouble uploading, again).

    Re: water effects

    Just create a backdrop and put it in a higher layer than the player and set the semi-transparency of the backdrop to about 64. I just tested this and it works great, and there is no drop in frame rate at all.

    ---EDIT---
    I whipped up a quick example demonstrating this. Since the collision with the backdrop in a different layer isn't detected, I added an invisible active to go in the bottom layer. This example also has a semi-realistic splash feature which changes depending on how fast you collide with the "water".

    Woops. I knew I forgot to mention something (the layers). I still like subtract more than semi-transparancy, though.

    Re: water effects

    I agree about Subtract. You can layer it with ADD for some ossum effects.

    If anyone didn't know, Subtract uses one colour and takes it from another. So if you have a colour with the following values:

    R = 255
    G = 255
    B = 0

    then it will subtract 255 from the red and green channels. The result is that it leaves only the blue channel. You can vary the colours to the vary the shade of the effect.

    Re: water effects

    Doing "and" effect with blue=255 is the same result as subtract with red=255, green=255, but probably faster
