    multiple sound cards

is there a way of selecting soundcards from mmf2?

I have been playing with the volume object, but I can't seem to get it to select the sound card

I will probably just embarass myself anyway, everytime I post a question I find the solution a few minutes (or hours later)

    thanks
    Dave

    Re: multiple sound cards

okay, (I think) I get what the volume object does sound-card-wise

it simply selects from the available cards and lets you control what is going "through" the lines

so if an app is using an available line you can control the "volume" of the sound on the line

but the volume object does not control the output (or input) of the app it is placed in

I would like to record two different inputs ( at different times)

I would like to have a track play, have a person sing along with that track and use the mic to record their singing

then I would like to playback both the original track and the singing track and record them both

It would be preferable if the userd did not need to mess with the windows mixer

one way I thought of to do this is to have two sound cards, one to record the mic, the other to record "what you hear"

this could be assigned through the windows mixers of the two cards

maybe there is some better (easier) way?

The problem is that not all computers have two sound cards.

this would not be a "distributed" program, I would be able to control the available hardware

    Re: multiple sound cards

I'm pretty sure most programs use which ever sound card is the "Windows Default". I do multi track audio recording. I have a firewire sound card with 8 inputs and 8 outputs. Windows will use which ever pair of outputs I select.

With one sound card, you should be able to do the Play Track while Record another Track at the same time. (I think it's called Full Duplex... being able to record and playback at the same time.)

You'll just have to figure out how to record just what's coming IN on the Mic input, instead of what's going OUT to your speakers.

    sound card line selection tricks...

    aidmm

this is in fact what I am doing now

I found a program called power mixer which will accept command line switches

it also has presets and can do some cool fades etc.

by running this program and using the switches and presets I can make my app do what I want with one sound card

While I don't mind paying the 18 bucks for power mixer I am curious if anyone knows of a free windows mixer "replacement" which will accept command line switches (or something) and let me create these presets?

anyway this works, seems fairly cool, and I have actually learned a lot about several things in mmf and writing apps in general

    thanx
    Dave
