Bonus Pack 1 Platform Movement ... is it good?

I'm in the middle of deciding on a 2D engine and while I'm on an Intel mac, the demo of MMF2 runs perfectly fine in Parallels. So, while I use Unity 3D for my huge games, I'm torn between a couple of simpler tools for my 2D work.

I'm an artist/designer etc and am creating art for a lovely little side-scroller in the tradition of the fab Knytt Stories. A story about a lost bunny toy and the little child who has to find it.

I saw (somewhere) that the Platform Movement in Bonus Pack 1 (by Fodo?) is a superb replacement for the standard platformer movement that comes in MMF2 ... is that true?

    Thanks.

The Platform Movement Object is a good choice, particularly if you're just starting out, and definitely far better than the standard platform movement. It's not as flexible as an entirely custom-made movement made through events, but nothing ever is. I believe that Knytt Stories used a custom movement, but the Platform Movement Object should give you something comparable.

There's a tutorial at http://www.clickteam.com/eng/learning_resources.php about custom platform movements - if you want to see the style of movement the the PMO provides, have a look at the first frame of the example file that comes with it. (It doesn't use the PMO itself but uses events to create a movement that's comparable to it, so will work in the demo.)

Platform Movement Object is really superb. It's a better choice than the MMF2 one and it doesn't take as long as making your own. (At the cost of flexibility)

Give it ago, you won't be disappointed unless your project requires something odd/unique.

I remember Nifflas saying he used the Platform Movement Object in Knytt... Not sure though.

Thanks for the violently rapid replies ... I'm only used to that on two other forums of the many I've inhabited over many many years. Nice to see an active, knowledgeable and friendly community.

DavidN, I've downloaded and looked at the tutorial. Very nice, kudos. If PMO is that good and all ready to just include and use in my file, that's superb. Thanks for the heads up.
