    Flashlight effect

    hi all,

I want to create a flashlight effect in a top-down view game. the entire screen would be very dim with the mouse position showing a round lit spot with feathered edges. I was wondering what extension would serve this purpose best?

    Thanks for any reply!

    Re: Flashlight effect

After playing around with this technique, I couldn't figure out how to get an object to intigrate into the flashlight effect. Any active I add is unaffected by the darkness, i tried placing it on different layers but without any success. The only thing that worked partially was to change the actives ink level to subtractive, but this caused the colors to appear as if I was using night vision when the flashlight hit it.

    What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again for any help, I really appreciate it!

    Re: Flashlight effect

The darkness is a background object (an overlay), so if you want your active to be underneath it, you'll have to put the darkness on a separate layer above the active(s).

    Re: Flashlight effect

If you have problems with placing the overlay in a different layer, try moving it a little in the frame editor. They tend to bug if placed at 0,0 for some reason. If it still won't work, add an event that manually updates it every loop.

    Re: Flashlight effect

AHH!! I didn't know about the bug! It works fine when I set the overlay to 1,1 and selected enable stretching and use absolute positions.

This looks much better than with all my actives set to subtractive! Thank you very much for your help and ideas. If anyone needs any bg music loops or any sound effects, please let me know as I have created tons of custom sounds (Instrumental and one-shot effects) for my music games.
