Attempting to make a Tile Editor...

So I'm going to have Maps in this game which consist of thousands of tiles. Since the whole game is going to be in 1 frame I want a way of loading in the tiles rather than painstakingly telling it what I want each tile to be.

I've created a seperate application; my plan was to make it so that when you click on a tile, it saves the position of that tile as the name of an Item in the .Ini, with a value that tells it which type of tile it is.
The problem is, I just found out you can't make an Item name the value of an object. I can't think of anyway to store the values of each tile in a .Ini...
Can anyone help me out here?

You can set Alt String A to the name of each object then call the object by that value.

    Just a thought...

    Good luck,
    K

Ahh, you can set a .Ini item to the name of an Alt String, this is progress....lets see what I can do with this.

It might be better to use a one dimensional array. Simply use the String Parser 2 object to store all information about a tile.

The array could look something like this:

    1: "0,0,grass 1"
    2: "0,50,grass 2"
    3: 0,100,grass 1"
    etc...

Then simply loop through the array, get the information from the strings using the String Parser, and create and position the correct tiles.

Alright, I was about to say I cant actually set an Alt String to a specific value, so I'm back where I started.

Thanks Popcorn, but I'm not at all familiar with this 'String Parser' object. I'll see if I can figure it out, I might come crying back for help though hehe

Okay, I've had a look at this object and I'm utterly confused.

Popcorn, That method which you described seems perfect, I don't suppose you would be kind enough to walk me through it in smaller steps? I just don't understand the functions of the object, or how to create an array etc. : /

sorry, just to avoid confusion; Popcorn that's not actually a one dimensional array, that's closer to a list.

also you said tiles?... if your using a generic size tile then you could use an array; and just render it with a fast loop.
