    How do I find a directory to install to?

    Hi,

    How do we go about finding out where a program is installed to provide a default installation directory?

    i.e.

    I want to install to the main Flight Simulator 9 directory.

    Mine is D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9

    So currently I have to manually navigate to this folder using browse ... would it be possible to say lookup the main executable which is in this main directory? (its called FS9.exe)

    Thanks in advance,

    Re: How do I find a directory to install to?

    OK, I've read the help file and understand its possible to do it via the registry entry.

    Obtain the directory from the Registry
    Uses information contained in the Registry to choose the installation directory.
    For example:

    Root key=HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    Key=txtfile\shell\open\command

    This would return the value: "C:\windows\notepad.exe %1", your installation program would suppress parameters and the file name and retain only its path. In this case it would be "C:\windows"

    Update key
    Writes the name of the installation directory in the indicated key of the Registry. This allows future updates and re-installations to find the directory.

    Note : if the last root key is selected ("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER") then the installer will try to get the key from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder and if the key doesn't exist it will try to get it from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder. You can also, if you wish, specify a different value (sub-key) name for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder : to do this, add the other name after the sub-key name and separate both names with a "\" character. For example : ValueName1\ValueName2.
    How do I go about finding out the registry information that I need to lookup as its got me in a right loop and my dyslexia doesn't help ...

    Am I to find it in the registry through 'regedit' via run in start menu. Thanks again for the help in advance.

    Re: How do I find a directory to install to?

    Hi all,

    Think I got it now.

    Used the search function within regedit to find the 'FS9.exe' and I found the following key which seems to be picking up the correct directory thanks anyways:

    My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.MicrosoftFlig htSimulator.9\Shell\Open\Command

    Name = Default
    Type = REG_SZ
    Data = D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\fs9.exe/FLT:%1

    This has been discussed before.
    Root = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Key = SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0
    Sub-key = EXE Path
    .:::.Joshtek.:::.

    Hang on; what I've got above works fine. With regards to different operating system languages should I use what you put or is this ok for what I have currently ... have tested and it works fine:

    My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.MicrosoftFlig htSimulator.9\Shell\Open\Command

    Name = Default
    Type = REG_SZ
    Data = D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\fs9.exe/FLT:%1

    I think the key you use should be OK.

    Cheers, as I said it is working. I'll turn off the 'read-only' feature just in case
