Display for 1-4 players: actives? backdrops?

This is the display for all players. I currently use four backdrops. If four players play all of them are visible.

If only 1 plays the other three images should be invisible. I cannot make backdrops invisible though. Should I use actives? Or should I place an active object with the same color over them to hide unused players?

A similar question: on pressing esc the menu (NOT MMF2's menu) should be shown...should I use an active object? Should I work with layers? I've never done that and don't know how it works.

Would be great if someone could help me out.

Well i think it would help if the players that weren't playing were invisible, so make them actives.

I would go with changing them to actives and showing/hiding them - it seems to make the most sense, given you'd be using the same number of objects no matter whether you used the "masking" technique or not.

You can use the subapp object to create menus over a game, as detailed here. http://www.clickteam.com/epicenter/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=2&Number=51398
