Talk or Thinking Balloons with Text Blitter

    Heya,

On a topdown game, say if the player collides (or gets in front of it) with an object/obstacle I want a balloon to appear next to the characters avatar like a talking balloon, providing info about the object the player has in front of him/her, and then disappear when the player moves on.

I read that Text Blitter is a good extension to do that but I can't figure out how it works. I'd appreciate some help and tips to do these balloons. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sonti. I know it would be a lot more work, but how about custom message boxes and then using the String Object. Use Active collision detectors, so when the character overlaps it it would cause the message box to pop up at the character's position giving the correct information.

That would work as well. I need a bit more information about active collision detectors though. I would rather have the string to appear when the player enters a certain position/point rather than just simple collision so that I can add more details in an active object that have more than one object in it.

For instance, if I have an active picture of a table and on this table there are forks, spoons, milk and a glass. Instead of splicing the picture, I would love it if I could create a collision for certain parts of this picture rather than a simple if x collides with Activepicture do this. Is this possible?

But yes, strings would work very well.

You may be ableto plat around with zones for you collisions.

    Collision detectors work like this

    Character overlapping detector
+only one action when events loops

Pop up your custom message box with the correct string (change what the alterable string says for each detector) and set its postion.

X Character overlapping detector (X donates negate)
Set the custom message box and string outside the frame.

For the string you will need to change its property to not show as background and the order should be to front.

Re: Talk or Thinking Balloons with Text Blitter

I'm a bit new to MMF2. I don't know how to put these detectors. I can do it with a whole object like this

    Collision between "player" and "table"

    But what I want to do is if possible something like;

Collision between "player" and a part of the table or x,y position or coordinates of "table"

So that I can have multiple message boxes for one active picture.

Thank you for your help nivram, the way you explained works very well for what I have in mind. But I still don't know how to create zones or detectors.

As a solution, I'm thinking about using Alpha Channel Objects that are completely invisible to create empty boxes on certain positions so that once the player overlaps this invisible object I can get the message to pop.

Alright getting there. It works quite fine now however I have a minor problem or a bug. I have a background color for strings. In game when the message appears and if the player moves around, the message box moves (if player is still overlapping that is) as well which is great but the background color kind of paints the game. Works fine if I don't put any background color.

Heres a screenshot showing my problem.

Awesome thanks. Instead of using a backgroundcolor I created a messagebox similar to yours and now it is working great.

    Cheers for the help.
